I know all about the 6.0L Powerstroke's issues: Starts in the oil cooler, coolant side getting clogged with broken down coolant, starving the EGR cooler causing it to burst and fail, leading to failure of the cooling system which leads to blown head gaskets.

Would you guys stand to reason that 6.0 Powerstrokes that are still running are probably ok? They are certainly an intriguing engine, and it seems that bulletproofing a 6.0L for stock or a little bump in power will solve the 6.0L's problems.

Would you guys be afraid of a bulletproofed 6.0L? Id love a 6.7, but cant do the payments. I guess the other question is this: Is a 6.0L Super Duty still a viable pickup truck? Id love a 7.3, but I cant find one thats reasonable with under 300,000 miles.

I’d be more concerned with the amount of rust they have at this point and the price that people want with a truck of that age

I would not be afraid of owning one. Other concerns for those are the FICMs, turbos sticking and high pressure oil leaks. As long as you get one for a good price I wouldn’t worry about the issues they tend to have.

He's in AZ, fading yes, rust not so much.

I say if you can find a good truck and there is a shop you trust to bullet proof it, go for it. Maybe even get an estimate before you buy to get the all in cost.

I’d try and find one already bulletproof door. That said it’s one of the best sounding diesels imho.

Bulletproof a 6.0, properly maintain it, turn up the wick and have fun.

I owned a 2006 CCLB Powerstroke. It was one of my favorite trucks that I've owned. Yes, I had to "bulletproof" it. That term gets thrown around a lot, and everyone's definition is different. It was a great truck, but it will nickel and dime you to death.

    This.

I bought one new in 05 and owned it for 11 years. The engine has too many weak links for me to ever consider buying another.

I know of at least three very successful companies that built their business off of fixing 6.0’s.

I also know I received a $3,500 check from a 6.0 Powerstroke class action lawsuit against Ford and IH. It covered about 10% of my out of pocket expenses for repairs after the warranty expired.

No thanks. Hard pass for me.

Absolutely love the 6.0s. Something about those trucks looks so good to me. Very very clean design.

Love the 6.0’s and I’ve had a few. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one as long as it’s not rusted out.

When I buy another I will absolutely first coolant flush, oil cooler egr delete and head studs.

    +1 Great looking truck

-1,000,000 on the engine though. A total POS in every aspect. A very distant 3rd among diesel offerings of that ere. Yes, you can upgrade it, but having to do that for basic reliability in unacceptable. Ford and IH really screwed the pooch on that engine.

Had one and loved it. Fuel conditioner in every tank and synthetic oil. Other than a leaky turbo gasket replaced under warranty, no problems. Didn't abuse it, but it was a daily and I towed with it.

Ford gets a lot of flack for the 6.0 but I can tell you that the other two offerings during that time weren't that great either. Dodge of that vintage was pure junk with a great engine. The Duramax is overrated to me, my friends that have had them of the same vintage had to stick major $$$ to keep them going (turbo, head gasket, glow plugs, even a rebuilt Allison) The GM chassis is a joke, with terrible brakes, and can't hold a candle to the Ford load wise.

ours had the HPOP done under warranty. We took care of the egr/oil cooler/coolant etc..., we did NOT put in head studs as it's still on the stock tune and will likely stay that way.

We should have had an aftermarket gauge on it to monitor battery voltage and we probably wouldnt have lost the FICM. It now has a high output alternator as well.

If you find a truck and can verify it's had that shit taken care of I would be ok with it.

All of these along with injectors.

For some reason, a buddy of mine has been through 3 number 7 injectors in the last 2 years... makes no sense.

His FICM is always acting up too.

If I’d have owned one since new and done all the mods myself I wouldn’t have a problem owning a 6.0 or a 6.4. Without really knowing the history of either I wouldn’t buy one used.
