These old stangs can not run with the stangs of the last few years, but they are fun to drive, easy to work on, keep their value, and parts are plentiful.

Nothing sounds better than an open exhaust 289/302 at 7000rpm passing a $75,000 Porsche.

Hey Doc,
Welcome to the site. Mustang Race fan here too. Is your 95R all stock or have you done any mods to it? the old stangs are sweet especially if its a 65 R-model. Only 37 made and I dont know how many still exist but they are valuable in the 150-175K area. I have never seen a real one up close but it would be a treat. Hope you are enjoying the 95R.

Careful now! Team Shelby got some of their 65' GT 350 R Models to speeds well over 165mph. With forty year old technology they could get over 400 ponies with only 293 cubes (stroked 289). The car also weighed a little over 2750lbs. As a former owner of a 65' Shelby GT 350 #501, you'd own the road to 110mph. After that you had no more, wide open. The car would only go to about that, with the low 4.11 gearing and four speed. The R Models were a different breed of animal all together, though.

I bought my R model in March to race. It was a stock 3900 mile car. I am now having seconds thoughts about welding in a roll bar. It sure is a fun street car.
I agree about the '65 R models. Those were brilliantly designed hotrods. In vintage racing you see allot of '65R replicas. The parts are readily available to change a GT350 to a GT350 R model (of course, you can build a replica GT350/GT350R out of a regular fastback).
A vintage racer buddy has a 03 Cobra. I think it may be the fastest street car I've ever driven. (His is also red which I believe is a rare color in 03). How do you compare the two cars? Any mods?

cheers....dj...

Hey Doc,
My 03 Cobra is stock right now with exhaust and cai mods planned soon. My 95R has Bassani x-pipe w/cats, fr500 catback exhaust, densecharger cai, 3.73 motorsport gears, I run the timing at 16 degrees and mix 94 and 100 octane sunoco. I like this setup alot and the car rips. I have not run it at the track but just by sotp feel its as fast or faster than my 03. But that will change quick when I do a few mods to the 03. But hands down the 95R is a better handling and braking machine. From the factory the 03 is at most a .90 on the skidpad and the 95R is .96-.97. the braking on the 03 is around 122 ft 60-0 but the 95R is awesome at 109 ft in the 60-0. I like the fact that I can torque steer more with the 95R than the 03. both are great cars to drive hard but on the road course I would take the 95R.
