So I honestly don’t feel like spending 7000 dollars on swapping out for a t56 magnum with the driveshaft, clutch and cross member. As I don’t think I’ll ever make enough power to need this transmission. However it is still not out of the question. What would any of you do if you were to have your t56 rebuilt and what do you think the cost would be? I say new clutch because I figure while it’s open even if my clutch is good I might as well put another one in there

i wouldn't either, and it's an unnecessary expense. i would just pull that t-56 and check it out. you might find that it doesn't even need a full rebuild. so then you can upgrade the weak spots (tob retainer, shift keys, 26-spline input), add a new clutch, and you might get out under $2k to 2.5k, esp if u can pull the trans yourself.

If there's any possible way you can pull the trans yourself then that's the route to go. There's videos on youtube on how to tear down and reassemble a T56. When I did mine years ago I had a large table to set down the parts in the order I pulled them out, making sure to keep the up/down orientation on each part the same as they came out. It's always scary on the first try but definitely doable.

Barring that, you'll have to find a reputable shop that can do the R&R and rebuild. Not many places rebuild transmissions on-site anymore, they just get their rebuilds from a warehouse somewhere.

If it's a roll pin you're probably $600-800 to fix. If it needs to be rebuilt, probably $2k.

Hopefully you can pull the transmission yourself - it's pretty straightforward, but for some reason shops want $$$$ to do it (or anything these days I suppose)

Have you tried the simple stuff yet, rolling the car front to back and pull on the shifter at the same time.

Have you tried removing the shifter from the trans to look for anything visible wrong or stuck from the shifter?

Can you press the clutch and start the car or is it locked up completely?

I’ve heard of people forcefully towing the car in reverse by a truck and it helps free the transmission. Never done it but heard of it from a few sources.

not sure if this is still the case but if you go to the tremec website they have a list of authorized dealers/rebuilders throughout the country. i would def only go to one of them but that's just me. that's how i found my rebuilder years ago and they did a great job on both my t-56's (i didn't need full rebuild but they did all the upgrades and really knew their shit)

edit: probably called authorized service centers or somthing like that

Probably Fortes Parts connection. They don’t rebuild there or didn’t in the past.

Look up theGearbox.org, I know they sell all the T56 parts, not sure about service. Another big transmission shop is Tick performance.

So I have a local shop and a dude I know personally that does awesome work that is going to pull my transmission and have it shipped out to a company called rpm transmissions. Anyone ever dealt with them or had any experience.

oh so since you can't pull the trans yourself it would probably be a good idea to thoroughly review post #27. it might save you a lot of $.

in your first post you say the clutch is working fine. but how do you know that if you can't move the shifter? did you get under the car and look in the inspection window to see if the clutch is actually releasing?

No I was just stating the clutch is working fine because the car is in neutral with the clutch pushed in while in 4th gear ( I can move the car forward or reverse by someone pushing it) and then when the clutch is released in 4th gear I can physically drive the car in that gear with zero issues like a normal car. I just can not physically shift the car into any other gears besides that specific gear in the cobra

I took everything off the shifter on the top of the transmission to remove it but I could not pull the shifter off I’m assuming because it’s in gear and won’t move

I have tried removing the shifter I could not pull it out of the transmission. I’ve tried moving shifter with the car movin or stopped. I can start the car no issues with the clutch pushed in. If I release it it will stall because it is in 4th gear. I have not tired the tow truck method that you have said.

The shifter is usually RTV'd to the top of the trans to prevent leaks. Usually you push or pull on the shifter side to side (in neutral push left and right). I know you cannot do this if the shifter is in 4th. You might need to tap on the base of the shifter to release the RTV. Then it should be able to pull up and removed from the trans.

The bottom of the shifter is a rounded ball that goes into a bushing in the trans, should be nothing holding it in there. So if the RTV is free, you should be able to lift out the shifter. At minimum, the handle will need to be removed to pull the transmission out of the car.
