So I was driving my cobra today got on it 1st-4th gear just going through the gears as everything was fine until it wouldn’t come out of fourth. Is this what the key failure would be? Any info would be awesome. What would the average repair/price of this be. Transmission was shifting fine and there were no grinds in and out of gears as I was drivin. Clutch and everything still works as should just can’t move the shifter out of 4th

Same thing happened to my 01 Cobra. It was so long ago that I don't remember the exact cause but it's probably a syncro, shift fork or something similar. Parts are probably inexpensive but labor may not be.

I forced my shifter out of 4th (It was very hard to do) and limped it back to the last shop who worked on it.

If you're locked in gear with the engine off, mostly likely a roll pin wallowed out of its hole in the transmission. If you're able to force it out of gear then probably a syncro or something; if it's mechanically locked in gear and not coming out then yea I'd go with roll pin.

That happened to me at around 175kish miles several years ago.

The part is cheap - like $0.50 - but the labor is not because you have to take apart the whole transmission. I think I paid like $800 to have mine fixed.

When they have it apart, it'd be a good idea to have them rebuild anything that needs rebuilding since they're already in there. FWIW, at 175k miles the shop said mine looked mint and could easily do another 200 or 300k without needing anything rebuilt.

Also, when it happened to me, several other people chimed in saying their roll pins had also wallowed out and locked them in gear, so it's somewhat "common" it seems on here.

The car has 47000 miles. Which I would not take out of consideration as the car is 21 years old. As far as you said the car being off, it does this whether the cars runnin or it isn’t. I physically can not get the car out of gear and I’ve tried multiple different ways I’ve come to understand that this transmission is probably in need of a rebuild or replaced either way

Mine was damaged when the bearing retainer broke too. I ended up going with a T56 Magnum. I did not want to deal with a shop repair that could have not done it right and the chance of having to pull the tranny again.

I hear ya it’s a crap shoot. I just don’t plan on makin crazy power with this car. So I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a t56 magnum if I don’t have to

I had no issues shiftin. This was completely fine. I went to shift out of fourth and it just didn’t budge it’s very odd and I don’t understand why besides what a previous person said with the roll pin

Well, your profile says you're from Maine, so...
LOL, I was just going to point that out to him.

Almost peak leaf pepping up here hahaha. This week for sure. Means only a few more weeks of driving season left before storage.
We're pretty much peak here, as well. Another 2 weeks and the trees that had leaves will be pretty much bare.

So I honestly don’t feel like spending 7000 dollars on swapping out for a t56 magnum with the driveshaft, clutch and cross member. As I don’t think I’ll ever make enough power to need this transmission. However it is still not out of the question. What would any of you do if you were to have your t56 rebuilt and what do you think the cost would be? I say new clutch because I figure while it’s open even if my clutch is good I might as well put another one in there
