In the ongoing sage of rebuilding my 98 Cobra engine. I need to purchase a Dial Bore Gauge to measure for proper bearing clearances and confirm cylinder bore sizes. But can’t decide which way to go. Analog or traditional dial (indicator) bore gauges have been in use forever. Are accurate down to...
An H-pipe tends to give a deeper throatier exhaust note, reminiscent of Muscle cars from the 60’s. Where as an X-pipe tends to give a higher and more raspy exhaust note. More akin to a NASCAR. That’s how the author of an article I read about performance exhaust systems, described the sound...
I did a similar mod on my 98 Cobra. It involved purchasing an earlier version of the same factory oil pressure gauge but, instead of being fixed to stop midway, the needle can sweep the entire range of the gage, subject to the incoming voltage signal. And a variable voltage oil pressure sending...
While I’m a Ford guy at heart, I always liked the styling and looks of the 4th-gen (98-02) and final version of the TransAm. Even in 2021 they are still classy. But weren’t fast enough to beat my 98 Cobra. And that’s just a fact!
There should be a plethora of data and information available by now of how much HP and Torque a 96-99 Cobra Teksid aluminum block can reliably withstand. Properly tuned with sufficient fuel, for a moderately abused daily driver. But I’ll be damn if I can find it and I’ve been looking. Can anyone...
Does anyone know how to determine radiator cooling capacity when power is increased by forced induction on a previously N/A engine?
Determining cooling capacity seems to be an area where very little information exists, or I haven’t been looking in the right places for it. More power = more...
Thank y’all for your input. I back burnered the engine portion of this project while working on the front suspension. With the summer heat here in Texas, it’s time to refocus back on the engine.
Anyway I had a well known engine shop in the area prep the block, balance the rotating assembly and...
98 svt I remember you and your Cobra coupe from way back. Mainly because I have a 98 vert also in Laser Red. Oddly enough I’m knee deep in the middle of the final upgrade projects planned for this car. Installation of a full MM K-member and front suspension package and build up of the engine...
Looking for anyone with experience rebuilding a 4.6L aluminum Teksid block. And what method(s) they used to check main and rod bearing clearances during assembly.
I’m leaning towards the older method of using a micrometer and lead impression wire to check clearance. This method is still...
That’s great, impressive!
What were your Torque #’s?
What kind of dyno was it verified on?
Did you get a print out of the dyno test(s)?
What fuel was being used?
I’d appreciate whatever info/data you can provide.
I’ve experienced the same problem on my 98 Cobra with a V1 S-trim. The factory stock radiators are only a single pass. While adequate for a stock engine they don’t have the cooling capacity in hot climates when boosted. Also stay with a 180 deg thermostat. The EECV PCM is dependent on coolant...
As for injectors I tried 39’s with an FMU (SC’ed engine) but finally went with Seimens-Deka 60lbs/hr injectors and adjustable FP regulator w/manifold pressure port. That allowed me to delete the FMU. And was able to get a great tune.
I’d go with the forged steel Cobra crankshaft from a 96-04 4.6L. They are fairly easy to find and good to 1,500 HP (when properly prepared). A good investment for lower end strength, especially if you decide to up the power later on. Reportedly cast steel GT crankshafts are only good to about...
The EGR serves other purposes besides being an anti-pollution device. It also serves to cool down combustion chamber temperatures in the event they get to high. Just saying...
Mishimoto radiators have gotten good reviews from other Mustang owners.
I know a guy that replaced his factory radiator on a 5.0 Fox body with one. And he seemed pleased.
