"How The SR-71 Blackbird Works," by Animagraffs

Jake at Animagraffs has always made the most incredible 3D-modeled cutaway videos. His features on the steam and diesel-electric locomotives are amazing. But this time he has totally outdone himself. This video is almost an hour long, and it's got more info on my favorite plane in one place than...

    Have I missed anything?

Been gone a while. Work tried to promote me into management, it went sideways faster than a nuke in a Uranium mine. You know? You try and tell your bosses "This isn't going to work out like you're thinking. History will not judge you kindly." And they're all, like, "Oh, Jim, you always crack us...

Can anyone tell me where to find some info on DOHC in-line six heads?

Im in a spot where I need to know all the dimensional information on the GM Vortec 4200 cylinder heads. Bolt spacing dimensions, bore spacing, etc. Can anyone recommend where I can find this info?

Question about bleeding the brakes on an '03 Cobra

Can the brakes on the '03 Cobra be bled with a hand-held vacuum pump, like any other car? Or is there anything unique about them that prevents that? The reason I have to bleed the brakes is I just replaced the ABS module, and now there's all kinds of air in the lines.

    First mistake of 2023

Earlier, in another place, I said I was ending 2023 on a high note. People noticed. I tried to explain it as a simple typo. I tried to explain it as "barely concealed narcissism," which has always worked in the past. Tough crowd, tonight, I guess, because they aren't buying it. Dammit. A guy...

Quantum Physics thought of the day

Schrodinger didn't put the cat in the box. The cat put Schrodinger outside the box. Think about it. There is an alternative theory, though: Schrodinger did not put the cat in the box. He set the box on the floor, and said, "Cat, there is poison gas in that box. Do not, under any circumstances...

Fusion breakthrough: break-even met and surpassed.

Lawrence Livermore Labs, and the National Ignition Facility have just announced a major fusion milestone: for the first time, they got more energy out of the reaction than they had to pump into to it to make it happen. For over 60 years, "break-even" has been the dream, where we finally get as...

... not that I was ever gone ...

I'm back. Sort of. Not that I was ever gone, per se, but, y'all know how it goes, trying to keep the planet spinning along in its mutually barycentric Earth/Moon/Solar orbit, at 67-68K miles per hour, 24x7x365.25. And fix the occasional x-ray machine. Speaking of which: Holy freaking Carp on...

Tonight's Lesson (learn from my mistakes, SVTPerformance!)

Say you just had a bit of success with your writing career. So to celebrate you buy a bottle of 10-year-aged Laphroaig Scotch Whiskey. Which, I don't care who you are, is the good stuff. Now, say that after having two "quadruples" of Laphroaig, you decide, (hours later, of course!) to go back...

    Stress at work

Lots of stress at work. Saw it coming, 2 years ago. Told everyone, was assured there was nothing to be worried about. Told them, repeatedly, "No, I'm not guessing. I'm you're number one guy, and I'm telling you this is going to happen, it's coming." They didn't listen. It has come to pass. Now...

Lunar eclipse, tonight, viewable across most of the USA, except for Alaska

Starting around midnight, tonight, Sunday 5/15/2022, there is going to be a lunar eclipse. The moon will turn blood red. It'll last about an 1.5 hours. These events have names, and this one is the "Super Flower Blood Moon." It'll be visible across most of the USA, but not Alaska.

    The Harrier

Everyone knows the Harrier, the fighter jet that can take off and land vertically, famously used in the USMC. But what you might not know is, that jet was named after the real bird fo prey, the Harrier. Which, like the fighter jet, is the only large bird of prey that can take off and land...

Had to put our horse down, this evening

My wife's horse had to have colic surgery day before yesterday. He was getting better. But today around 2:00PM, he took a turn for the worse and went down hill fast. When he could no longer get back on his feet, we made the decision to put him down. He was 20 years old, and my wife had him for...

    For the writers on here

I know several of us write. I just found out Amazon Kindle has something new: Kindle Vella. It's made for serialized short stories of 600-5,000 words. If you're like me, you have tons of stuff you have written in blaze of inspiration, ... that didn't fit anywhere, in any story you were...

    Radioisotopes and HR

Today was utterly wasted on utterly idiotic corporate policy training. On-line. It seems it is designed by sadists to be as punishingly boring as possible. I mean that, too. The boredom is punishing. There's a whole major hospital right outside the door of my office, machines making radiation...

    Legal question, sort of

My '03 Cobra ABS/traction control module has failed, allowing it to dump brake fluid. Ford no longer makes the part, and it seems no one has it in stock. However, there is an ABS-delete module. Basically it's a carved hunk of billet aluminum that connects to the existing fittings. Put it in...

    Freakin' cold!

So I've somehow got every Covid-19 antibody. Which means I've been exposed (not surprising since i work in one of Houston's largest medical-center hospitals), but I have have never been sick. Completely asymptomatic. I should have been a goner. I'm 60, overweight, high-blood pressure...

    ABS braking problem

I've got an '03 Cobra vert. I've been losing brake fluid like crazy, lately. Turns out the ABS hydraulic pump is leaking from numerous fittings. Anybody have experience with this? I haven't pulled it yet, but I can see six fittings of different sizes, and several are leaking, and there's brake...

    Breaking the universe

There is a real app called the "Universe Splitter." You can get it through the Apple App store. It's real, it's based on our current understanding of the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics. You type in two things you want to do, say, read a book or mow the lawn, and hit enter. It...

Older guys: What do you still want to do?

This was inspired by Adower's thread on starting to get rid of stuff. So: guys and gals in the 50-and-up range: What things in life do you still want to do? Business, politics, something in the arts? Just plans for retirement and watching the sunset from the porch? What is it? I'd like to hit...

Muon experiment may hint at undiscovered aspect of physics

The Muon is an elementary particle. Like the electron, it possesses one unit of negative charge. But it is 200 times more massive than an electron. We don't find them anywhere except in our particle colliders, they just don't seem to "happen" in nature. (only three of the 13 known particles show...

    Scale, flyable, B-17 bomber

Yes, it's scale. It's all riveted aluminum. Took the guy over 17 years to build it. It's powered by 4 engines. And: it has to have a pilot. You fly this model!

    How about some sun?

Images made by the Inouye solar telescope. The time on these has been sped up because the structures you see are all so large, and moving so far, it takes hours to see any kind of change.

    Any Harley owners out there?

If so, serious question: Is there an SVTPerformance equivalent site for Harley Davidson bikes?
