I hope, @Weather Man, that we DO move our supply chains (and manufacturing for that matter) from China in the long game, because at the present time China can easily sanction the U.S. by ending exports (all, or some) to American companies. We cannot manufacture our own chips, parts, equipment presently made in China overnight. IMO we put a knife to our throat by trusting a Communist country (and an ally of Russia) to play fairly. They will do what is in THEIR best interest. And they know HOW dependent we are upon their manufacturing and resources.

Like you said, security of supply is outweighing cheapest supplier. I'll add that product quality should be a factor as well. I still have a Swingline stapler in my office that I used in the Navy from 1967-1969. I took it with me when I was transferred to Defense Intelligence Agency in 1969. That's 55 years ago!! Looks brand new! Works like it's brand new! It's rugged and high quality. And when you look under the base plate you see.....MADE IN U.S.! I have a $35 Swingline stapler as well, and less than a month after buying it it's binding and acting funking. This one, of course, is made in China! Crap quality, BUT it is less expensive to make and people have become acclimated to lesser quality across the manufacturing board. Time for that to change, too. Make American Great Again! Make American Manufacturing Great Again!

Hard to see how encouraging companies to move supply chains from China is the long game, and they are moving. Security of supply is outweighing cheapest supplier, which isn't cheap, if they can't supply.
LOL. It'll never happen unless you dump at least 50% of the legislators who are in office right now.

Trump got it started, but chyna and the rest of the globalists put the kabash on that.

Have you ever personally worked directly with a chynese company?

I’m getting my arse kicked trying to source stainless steel that we use tons of. Crazy to be in this situation.

It's going to get much worse before it gets better. Russia is (was?) one of the largest miners of nickel in the world. The company I work for is buying up TONS of SST right now to secure the supply chain moving forward. I would assume we're not the only ones.

Money is money, substantial reporting on businesses leaving China. For whatever reason, quality and timeliness from China have been so awful for over 2 years that companies are leaving to save themselves.

Leaving chyna to go where? United States? Lol. Not with the current regimes in charge.

Look on Amazon to see all the copycat products.
Prints and processes to manufacture 25% of those products the chynese duplicated from American tooling prints/processes sent to chyna years ago to "save a buck". Started a long time ago with the hollow American factories.

Oh, don't get me wrong. ****, as a manufacturing engineer, I want made in USA more than anyone, but life ain't hugs and puppies anymore.

BTW, I've been on both ends of dealing (selling/buying) with chynese. The slowest, most demanding, lying people I've ever dealt with. **** chyna.

When the US company subs the chynese to make the tooling/components/subassemblies/assemblies, all they have to do is make 2 instead of 1.

One for you, one for xi.

The prc already has a captive market of what, 500 million chynese. That's assuming 1 billion of the chynese are too poor to buy the product in the first place.

Once the shareholders became more important than the customers, the decline began.

Toyota announces production pauses due to Shanghai lockdown

TM -2.79%May 10, 2022 7:13 AM ET
Toyota (NYSE:TM) is joining a host of other automakers in tempering its manufacturing schedule due to pandemic restrictions in China.
“Due to the impact of the semiconductor shortage, we announced our revised production plan for May,” the company wrote in a press release. “However, as a result of the lockdown in Shanghai, China, we have decided to additionally suspend operations of 14 lines at 8 plants in Japan from May 16 to May 21.”
While 750,000 units had been slated for production, delays will cause that number to fall to 700,000 units.
“The shortage of semiconductors, spread of COVID-19 and other factors are making it difficult to look several months ahead,” the release added.

Taiwan Semiconductor to raise prices for customers starting in 2023: report

TSM -0.20%May 11, 2022 1:20 PM ET3 Comments
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) has reportedly informed some of its customers that it will raise its prices between 5% and 9%, starting next year, according to Nikkei Asia.
The news outlet, citing people briefed on the matter, noted that the price increases are a result of inflation concerns, rising costs and the company's expansion to help boost semiconductor output.
The price hike would be the second in less than a year, though the hike is less than the 10% to 20% rise it told clients it would raise prices for 2022.
Taiwan Semi (TSM) shares were flat in mid-day trading on Wednesday at $88.82.
In January, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) Chief Executive C.C. Wei said the company would spend as much as $44 billion on capital expenditures this year to help with the global semiconductor shortage.
Taiwan Semi (TSM) makes chips for a number of clients, including Apple (AAPL), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA).
Earlier this month, the Semiconductor Industry Association said global semiconductor sales rose 1.1% month-over-month in March to $50.6 billion, while first-quarter sales totaled $151.7 billion, up 23% year-over-year, but down 0.5% over the fourth quarter of 2021.

Harley-Davidson suspends production in York County factory

FOX43 Newsroom - Yesterday 9:16 PM

Harley-Davidson officials say the company is suspending production at its York County plant for the unforeseeable future.
The company says it's temporarily halting all vehicle production and shipments at the vehicle assembly plant in Springettsbury Township due to a supply chain related matter.
The production suspension excludes Harley-Davidson's new LiveWire electric bike.
As of May 18, it's unclear how many employees will be impacted and for how long.
A Harley-Davidson spokesperson commented on the suspension in a statement Wednesday night, writing, "the company is committed to finding a solution and resolving this situation in a matter of urgency."

Local John Deere dealership front lot is empty, just a few used stragglers. Never seen it like this.

Somehow, the chip and supply line issues aren't affecting this Chinese company, interesting.
