Hi guys I'm wondering what I can do here ever since I removed the cats from my 94 and installed my flowmeters it's been smelling like gas. I still have my own sensors I unplugged the battery for several minutes hoping that it would kind of recalibrate air fuel mixture. I do have one of those Bram chips I beleive it's called where you stay in the performance and I set it to nonstarter Everytime the car sits without driving for awhile. The setting I use to drive is one up from stock nothing too crazy it has 2 seeing other than stock. When I put it on stock it wants to die when at idle.
Thanks

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction. Catalytic converters are usually used with internal combustion engines fueled by gasoline or diesel, including lean-burn engines, and sometimes on kerosene heaters and stoves.

If you're not rich in your tune....you took away the component that was doing it's job and this...is the result.

Other than the chip and exhaust work, what's been done to the car?

I’m new to Mod 4.6L 4v engines(foxbody guy) and just went down a bit of a wormhole chasing a rich smell after a engine rebuild and Holley EFI install. Long story short, YES!!!, you will absolutely get a rich smell without cats. This exact thing drove me nuts, especially trying to tune myself using the Holley Software. All is good now.

I went through the same thing. It’s basically raw untreated exhaust it’s gonna smell like fuel. Just wait until you pull your dipstick and smell fuel in your oil .

You would have LESS of a chance getting fuel through the rings if you removed the cats due to path of least resistance. (no cats)

Did you remove the cats to get a louder exhaust? I'm guessing that's a YES. IMO you should have retained the catalytic converters and chosen a catback that's a bit louder. Then you would have no gas smell issue but would have a slightly louder exhaust. Did you toss the cats?

Or was there another reason?

The engine had been rebuilt before I bought it the only thing I've done is the exhaust

Something is wrong if you are switching the tuner/chip to the stock setting and it won't idle/run properly.

I believe you would get better results by removing whatever that device is and spending an hour or two on a dyno. All you would need is an adj. fuel pressure regulator, timing light, volt meter, and basic tools.

I plan to add cats to some of my old cars with ls engines to avoid smelling like gas when I have to walk around the car while its running. I just don't care for the smell any longer.

I’m not sure if you guys are referring to the actual smell of raw fuel or just exhaust.

In no way should you have unburnt fuel exiting the engine cats or not.

Sure, some old car with a carb and no engine management to trim fuel delivery and a lame ignition system may pass some unburnt fuel through the exhaust, but still shouldn’t really smell like unburnt fuel unless you have a massive cam.

Heck my carbd 408w with a @300 duration .600 lift cam doesn’t smell like raw fuel once it’s warmed up.

My Lightning and Cobra (stock engines, no tunes or increased boost) easily pass CA smog, but with the only change being offroad pipes after they get their bi-annual smog check, they both will make your eyes water if you're standing near their exhaust (especially fun at drive-thru's). Totally normal, and you shouldn't be smelling fuel in your oil under any circumstances, cats or not.
