Motorcycles Riders and Helmets

Can anyone explain to me logically why any bike rider is on the road without a helmet? I got my first motorcycle (Suzuki DS80, an absolute tank) when I was 5. I rode dirt bikes mostly, but occasionally a road bike. I always wore a helmet, and feel like something is missing if I don't have one. I get that it's a personal choice, I just don't understand making that choice.

Here's what prompted this question:

I drove by this last night. Bike laying in the middle of US-17 and the body being loaded onto a gurney in a body bag. I already consider MB to be about the worst place around to ride a bike because of the tourist, but this guy wrecked all by himself. I'm not saying a helmet could have saved his life in this particular case, but there's a ton of motorcycle deaths in this area every year where it could have.

Here is my logic for riding with a helmet. The helmet isn't going to stop me from dying in a high speed crash. Where the helmet works is in a low speed tip over where you smack your head on the pavement and end up a vegetable.

I dont think it should be law at all...but, if you are dumb enough to not wear one i dont wanna hear ya bitch...if they can lol

I feel the same way about seabelts
If helmets are not law, then any driver that has an accident with them shouldn't be held responsible for any head injuries. Even if the accident is my fault, should I be on the hook for millions do to life long brain injury because they were not wearing a helmet?

Thats the real rub right there...same can be litigated with seatbelts

I sold a lot of motorcycles back in the day. The topic would come up and I would just ask the guy if he would let himself fall backwards and let his head bounce off our concrete floor without catching himself. On occasion, the lightbulb would go off.

Maine does not have a helmet law unless you are 18 or under. 19 or over and it is a personal decision. Most riders here in Maine do not wear a helmet.
Maine also allows anything on a License Plate. Something about freedom of speech.
And Maine is a Constitutional Carry State.
Unfortunately we have a left wing ding bat Tyrant bitch as Governor.
All of the above provisions we put in place before that bitch took office.

Born and raised Brockton. Living in Naples.
My body. My choice.
Now I do not ride but I will AWAYS support freedom. No matter what unless it is the killing of an innocent unarmed baby.
Down here in Florida I’d estimate that over 90% do not wear helmets and I can see why. It’s hot at fook and in all honesty if I rode and had a terrible accident I’d rather die than end up a crippled vegetable.

Worst wreck I had on my dirt bike was a test ride after a repair.

Always how it happens because “just going up the street”.

I would ride trails often so have a helmet and eye pro was mandatory

Only streetbike I’ve owned was a ZX10R. Bike would do 100mph in 1st gear. If you didn’t have the visor down you couldn’t breathe very well. You also couldn’t see because your eyes would tear up immediately.

I guess if you’re on a cruiser it would be manageable

Had a "half-helmet', knocked right off in an accident and ended up with a concussion and 15 stiches in the back of my head. Stuttered while talking for months.
But hey, it did look cool.

Can’t mess up the hair. All jokes aside I can’t think of a good reason to not have one on. I see it often though and I always wonder what the person is thinking. Maybe someone on here will chime in as a no-helmet rider and give their reason.

Ok I’ll bite. I’ve ridden in MB many times without a helmet. Why? Well because I liked it. Was it stupid. Yup. Will I do it again? Nope. Something about being at bike week and riding up the strip or riding out to dinner with no helmet was just really enjoyable.

And for some reason on a bike with no fairing and no helmet there is no wind noise. Wife on the back and we are talking to each other going up the road. But we were younger then, we have kids now. We think more about consequences of doing stupid things like that. Hell we really don’t even ride together much anymore, but when we do we have helmets on now.

Many riders don't wear helmets in Pennsylvania. The bigger question I have is why they wear masks if not a helmet. BIZARRE
Totally saw a dude in PA during the summer with shorts and a t shirt on his bike...no helmet...but you guessed it he a mask on lol

Id also think road debris a bugs hurt at highway speed

We call them Donorcycles for a reason.

But in Ohio it is also a personal choice, as Ohio tried to pass a Helmet law look up I think late 70's helmet protest and you seen how Ohio was just basically cowed to repeal their law about them.
