hey guys,
So I have a 2013 gt 500 that was full bolt with cams, it made 761 rwhp and 703 lb torque (had slight clutch slippage) on 91 octane fuel which is the only fuel I have available in my area. Anyway that didn't last long as the car started smoking not long after getting it home and later finding out I had a warped passenger side cylinder head. I did plan on building the engine at some point anyway, so off the L&M my block went for hopefully a one and done build. The guys doing the work to my car expect it to be somewhere around 800 rwhp when its all said and done thats with the factory blower still and a conservative tune. I don't see anyone putting down big hp on 91 octane pump gas and I'm starting to question the safety of my motor as id rather not have to do this build again. The turner says it can be done safely on 91, but all the research iv done I'm not finding any information to back that up. most guys are at least running 93 octane it seems. Anyway just wondering what you guys think... also any recommendations for added safety. keep in mind I have no access to 93, e85 or any race fuels...

thank you

Another option would be a Methanol kit from someone like Snow Performance?
I had one on my beemer- it was great until one of the two nozzles clogged for a second and it went lean and boom (I was running a JB4 with meth map though and really pushing it).

Wait, so L&M are the ones saying you can boost 800 wheel on 91 or a tuner you’re referencing?
Anything modified over stock on a 13/14 5.8 needs an octane bump when you surpass the 595ish wheel they made in stock configuration to be safe.
The basic pulley, tune, TB mod is good for an average 675 wheel. I’d be nervous going even above that without an octane bump over 91.

I'm sure elevation, correction, and the definition of "big hp" factor into it, but my car made 733 RWHP and 713 RWTQ on 91 octane (that's also the highest commonly available at the ~7K ft elevation where I live).

Dyno (vs RPM) STAGE 4 Power Pack.jpeg

Performance mods include JLT 127mm CF CAI, CFM Twin Jet 67mm TB, VMP 2.4" Upper, 90mm Idler, BPS Oversized & Ported Plenum/Elbow, NGK TR7-IX plugs, VMP Triple-Pass Dual-Fan H/E, and Reische 170' Tstat. All were installed by me and tuned by Eddie Giannini at Elite Performance and Tuning in Littleton, CO almost 5yrs and 15K miles ago. Those 15K miles include about half-a-dozen race passes at the Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack (1/2-mile drag races).

the guys doing the work to my car told me id be alright with the 800rwhp, not L&M

Im highly considering going methanol injection... I don't know a lot about it and the reviews seem to be hit and miss but I don't know if ill have any other option minus the torco. I was running a bit of vp madditive octanium before I had my first melt down. Wondering if I had the car tuned for 91 octane and just had the methanol kit on as a back up if the would be sufficient. Either that or ill stockpile torco octane booster in my garage and run some in every tank...

I’d stay far away from anyone saying you can make 800whp on 91 on a boosted car.

No, just no. E85? No problem, straight 91 pump, hell no. My GT500 would ping on 91 with just a tune/tb.

What's the DA where you're located? I know here in Colorado we have 91 but 800RWHP (Corrected) here isn't the Same as 800RWHP back at sea level....

You can probably get 800RWHP on a Dyno where you are depending on the Altitude but for example here in Colorado, 800RWHP on a Dyno is actually somewhere around 632RWHP Uncorrected. Altitude is a BITCH.

Wow I had no idea you were on 91 octane only. When Justin/VMP tuned my car for 91, they said I was safe @675 wheel. 725ish & up they said I’d be flirting with problems.
I’ve ran the car spiritedly with 91 but also run Torco frequently if my gas in the tank has any age to it. Sometimes I’ll mix it up to 95 with new gas just for piece of mind.

:iagree:
This was my exact point in referencing "elevation" and "correction."

My tuner understands my desire to remain at "safe" power levels. He assures me we're still there. Again, though, I know elevation and correction factor into the calculus. He provided a 100 octane race gas tune that I have yet to use and, when I planned that trip to ShelbyFest a couple of years ago, he also provided a lower elevation driving tune. As you know, the weather prevented us from making that trip, but the tune should come in handy when we (eventually) head your way on the eastern leg of our Route 66 road trip.

OP- Can you not have bulk E-85 in 50 gal drums shipped to you?

It's what guys are doing around my neck of the woods, South Carolina but E85 is sold at the pumps everywhere here. The 50 gal bulk E-85 is much better than pump also.
