A friend of mine called me on the weekend. Hey, I'm going to buy a new Eco Boost. Then I'm going to buy a 36' 5th wheel holiday trailer, which weighs 12,500lbs. The Ford dealer told me that it would pull it no problem. You know, because they advertise that they can pull 14,000lbs. What a F'ing joke. I told him to go right ahead. Set the pin in the box of that beer can, and watch it fold the truck in half. Some people are so stupid.

the advertised tow rating vs actual are a real eye opener when you actually read that sticker on the door.

If he has any bit of sense he will end up trading it for a super duty in no time.

Im not saying the 150s dont tow well, they've come a long way but they're not in the same world.

Yep it is and I’m a huge fan so far

I figured as much. Nothing quite like a HD truck when you actually need it.

Nothing worse when you dont lol.

I pulled a 10k lb bumper pull toybox with a 2011 F150 3.5 ecoboost. Truck had TONS of power and moved that trailer EASILY.

But damn.... It was a 2 hands on the wheel at all times, white-knuckle experience on the highway at anything over 50 mph. God forbit a tractor/trailer flew by me at 65+ mph. Multiple "oh shit" moments with that truck while in tow. NOT good to tow that kind of weight with a 1/2 ton.

Our camper is 6k dry. Luckily I had some experience there because my in laws have had a camper for longer than we did. Theirs is 83xx dry. I knew I didn’t want to go that big when we got ours for the F150. Camper towing is so different than an equipment trailer. I’ve pulled 8k on a flatbed easily with the EB because it’s not a 30’ wind sail. In that regard the F150 is awesome. Get into the travel trailer world and it’s a whole new ballgame. It’s insane the campers some idiots tow with a 1/2 ton. Or worse, a Tacoma

"so stupid" is kind of harsh to say about someone you call your friend, no?
Maybe uninformed would be a better adjective.

@HuntFishCobra ....thank you for the towing update. Do you think you should have gone 3:73s or even better, 4:30s? Seems like MPG gonna be single digits towing across the board.

@gimmie11s, (not being sarcastic) anything to add constructively for us first time 3/4 ton truck owners before I drop the cash?

If the 250 w/ 7.3 had the option for 3.73 I’d have considered it. IMO 4.30 would be overkill especially with 33-34” tires. My father in law who ordered a twin truck to mine is getting noticeably better mpg and he just hit 5k miles

If i remember right, your use would be an enclosed car hauler and maybe an RV down the road?

To make a good recommendation, you really want to have an idea of what you plan to use the truck for. We could open a huge can of worms, but realistically, if you EVER plan to buy an RV that weighs over 10k lbs, do yourself a favor and buy the diesel (any brand) for peace of mind while towing.

If you are confident you will only haul the car hauler and an RV 10k lbs or under, buy the nicest gas truck you can find in your price range and dont lose any sleep. The Ford 7.3 has proven to be leagues better than the Ram 6.4. I have not read much about the GM gas offering, but their interiors are about a decade behind Ram and even Ford (less so, however) so i'd pass on GM myself.

The 2020+ Powerstroke is a BEAST and is easily the fastest stock modern diesel in a drag race. The Cummins is a tried-proven motor with the most torque, but loses in a straight line to the Ford. The GM Duramax is, again, several years behind Ram and Ford.

There are Ram dealers offering 8-10, even 12% off of MSRP on a special order--yes even today. I ordered mine in back in March and got 14.2% off MSRP. I think that would be hard to duplicate today, but good deals can still be had on the Ram trucks.

The Fords are more expensive and have an interior that is not as nice as the Ram offerings trim levels being equal.

I absolutely love my 17 still. Only thing I want now is the bigger screen for the better cameras but its not worth me making the swap just for that.

Im in LOVE with the new truck. It's a beast and the perfect tool for the intent it was built.

But that intent is NOT daily driving in SoCal traffic lol.

I take her to work on Mondays or Fridays just to enjoy the unbelievable interior and gadgets, but at 17mpg on a good day and considering shes a 8500+ lb brick that wants to plow through everything in it's way--there are better choices for a DD.

Thats great gas mileage... for SoCal haha I avg 14-15 MPG on a 20 Explorer 3.0, 90% city driving of course.

That's surprising to hear about the Explorer. I'd like to pick one up for my wife.

17 is ok i suppose considering what my truck is. It's got 4.10's which put the cruise RPMs a little higher up in the range than I would like, being a diesel. Unloaded, just cruising really isn't her cup of tea.

But once it's loaded down, got DAMN! Thing is a monster and really comes into it's own. Makes you go WOW. Now im looking for a larger 5th wheel lol.

Mileage may vary from driver to driver of course, but I dont go crazy on it and my work commute is 7 miles one way which can translate to almost 30 mins. Do catch a ton of red lights and/or traffic though so thats a big tax on the MPG. The tach says I avg 16-17 MPG every fill up but I never go by that.

Took it on a long trip and was giving me a tad above 26 MPG, so pretty good overall.

Break in oil change done at 2552 miles. Wow, it was easy. Filter and drain plug are right next to each other. Didn’t even have to use ramps. The fill is a reach down in that massive engine bay!

Only pain was that FoMoCo hired King Kong himself to install oil filters on the Godzilla line. Nothing the ol screwdriver trick couldn’t handle but damn

Edit the picture isn’t working for some weird reason

@13COBRA lower than expected so far. Avg for the (short) life of the truck is 11.2. Best of highway driving has been a little disappointing at 12.5. This included 1 trip to/from work which has some city stop and go. My FIL is getting a little over 14 average and got 13 towing their 8700 dry camper to Tuttle Creek about 7 weeks ago. He’s almost at 6k miles

Interesting! Yours is by far the lowest I've seen so far. Average I've seen is 14 or so.

I was comparing it to the 6.2s that would fet 2-3 mpgs less.

The modern gas motors get better mpg than I would have imagined. 20 years ago, the "big blocks" by all companies would average 10-12 mpg empty.

The fact that now days these motors have 2x the horsepower and can achieve 14mpg is pretty amazing to be honest.

Yeah I try to drive pretty conservative too just to help the wallet lol. I was expecting 14-15 average based on my research too.

I’m reserving judgment on if there’s a problem until I hit 5k miles or so to allow the full on break in happen. I had almost 1500 mi before towing so it isn’t skewed too much. I was really hoping for 11-12 towing the boat (5k lbs) but I’m lucky to get 9.0. Windy day was 8.8 mpg
