I have a short bed F-250 as I just don’t like the looks of the long beds personally, but they are a lot rougher riding when empty.
I have a shell on mine so that helps. Plus switching to Bilsteins helped as well. Honestly I don't think it rides that bad. Granted I came from an Expedition on 24's.

Since this will be your first purchase I'd recommend either renting for the first year or buying something in good condition used (1-5 years old) with an empty weight around 4-5K lbs. and if you buy (even if new), try to stay as close to $20-30K as possible... why?
- Make sure you will actually use it
- Identify what you like and don't like (bed size, shower size, slide outs, exterior kitchen, exterior entertainment, etc.)
- Get a real feel for how well your F150 tows at around 50% of its tow rating (when loaded)
- When you've identified your wants/needs based on experience, you can go about buying the right trailer for your family where you didn't spend a ton of money learning what you like and if/how you will use it; and if you bought you can sell or trade in without taking a bath on it (that's why you want to stay close to $20-30K).

We spent $22K on our first one, sold it two years later for $16K, and learned that we wanted a dedicated bedroom, larger shower, & separated garage... we didn't use any of the entertainment extras or exterior features and would only want a slide out for the kitchen/dining area.

Also, if you decide to buy something that's 60-70% of your tow rating, even with a sway control system, your trailer will tow you in a strong wind which can be both physically and mentally exhausting. If you decide to get a trailer above 7K lbs. just get the F250; night and day difference.

This is exactly what we are doing next week. We are more on the motorhome side of the equation at this point. We are renting a 2018 32' motorhome and have a campsite just outside South Haven MI. Will be our first time camping too. So this will tell us where to head next!! We are super excited.

Dually is the best for towing.
F250/350 is good with a few upgrades.
The F150 just won't do it without risking life and limb.
Good luck

It's amazing, to me, how misrepresented towing capacity is.

As evidence by the folks with the squating 1/2 ton trucks pulling 38' camper with the golf cart in the bed of the truck (for good measure). lol

Seen that rig at Dicks Sporting Goods last night...

I'm seeing a trend here of everyone recommending getting a more capable truck. You do see these 1/2 ton trucks all the time loaded to the gills driving down the freeway, thanks to you guys I see why I should not join them.
I just got back from a four state RV trip with my son and I can say with some certainty that most of them were also stopped on the side of the road after passing us at a million miles an hour. Blown tires and mechanical problems.

Whatever you get try and run as lights as possible and invest in some tire monitors. We have a TST system on our class C

OP did you ever decide what size trailer you want to buy or what type? ie bumper pull or 5er?

I have no direct personal experience with toy haulers, but one thing I've observed with them is they seem to be really nose heavy. I'm guessing they're designed and built like that intentionally to compensate for when you have toys in the garage, but it's maybe something to keep in mind if you don't plan on using it to actually haul your toys much.

A couple months ago I passed a DRW F350 with a triple axle 5er toy hauler, and the bumper was damn near dragging on the ground.

We will be sticking with a bumper pull, at this time that's as far as we have gone. I went out and ordered a 22 RAM 2500 diesel this morning. It would of been a few hundred dollars cheaper to order from the dealer you recommended even with shipping costs included but I found a local dealer to go under invoice. It turned out to be a few hundred dollars more to order local but I'll be able to nit pick the truck once delivered.

We plan to attend the RV shows this winter and purchase a toy hauler around then.

I linked the truck I ordered below. I did add the digital rear view mirror which will be enabled when in tow mode, I think this is a new 22 option. Other than that this is the truck. Build & Price a 2021 Ram 2500 | Ram

Looks like an awesome truck. My only suggestion is to add the 5th wheel prep option, even if you don't plan on using it at first. The price isn't that bad to get it from the factory vs adding aftermarket rails later. Just my .02.

I spoke with the dealer about this and he told me it wasn't a big deal to add it, he said they modify them all the time. Not sure how true that is but that's what I was told.

I use my bed and I'm constantly loading and unloading things. I was thinking the cover pucks would get in the way and constantly catch on items. Hopefully I don't regret not getting the prep package.

On the way home we were coming up on a good sized camper and I look over at the wife and ask her "what kind of truck do you think is pulling that big trailer". She jokingly replies "probably a F-150". I started laughing but as we got closer I was surprised with what I saw. We pull up next to it and sure enough it was a 150 similar to mine with a damn 5th wheel in the bed, I was like WTF!! Truck didn't look overly squatted and was chugging along about 70 mph, truck had a few passengers as well!! Ecoboost was putting in some work.

Would never do rails again..they suck when your using the truck bed for anything else.

I got the B&W 5th wheel hitch that slides into the gooseneck hitch.

Totally agree. Get the 5th wheel prep. That will not only add the pucks and gooseneck ball in the center of the bed but it will also get you 7 way plug in the bed of the truck.

If you dont want to use the 5th prep, just keep the rails out of the truck and it can be used as normal.

It would be interesting to see how well the truck was actually doing. It might've looked ok, but he might've been pushing it. I get his that tow their toy haulers to the desert out here with half tons and it seems like the truck is working hard. I've had a few pass me only to pass them later on because they can barely get up the mountain.

I should add there's a mountain between me and where I go in the summer in Az. Goes fun sea level to 4000'. My Expedition did ok towing our boat (about 5k), but with my 250 I keep forgetting its back there.

I've been in this game a while. You aren't going to like my advise, although it will save you thousands if not first. First option: find a buddy that will go in half-zies on the investment. You can going to encounter TONS of problems even as "new". more than you realize. Tires, bearings, hugs, AC is a big one ....they ALL leak water. This is the shit you don't expect. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND renting, or going half with a buddy. Trust me if this is your first experience with a toy hauler, it's going to cost you a **** ton of money and more than you realize. Or just ignore me, and buy a brand new one. Have fun =)

as a prev service writer for an RV Dealer, all in all, they are shitboxes, that rattle, fall apart, have blow outs, leak water, slide outs get stuck, white/grey/black tank issues, a/c issues, ect.

tread carefully. maybe rent one instead of purchasing one.

You can always set a camper up to tow gooseneck instead of 5th wheel. That gives you a lot of extra bed space to work with.

My wife is still currently Active Duty so the chances of us moving in a few years are highly probable. If I knew I was going to be here forever then I would consider going in half with someone. I never even considered the option renting one, this is something I will most definitely look into, thanks for the tip!

I was hoping there were a few manufacturers that go above and beyond, I have no issues paying top dollar for something that is going to last. We have a few months to research on the brands, it looks like most of the RV shows are in January or February.
