So the black blanket/shield around my battery is falling apart. I pick up a new one at the dealership parts department today. Question: can I just undo the hold down bolt, lift up the battery, and exchange the blanket/wrap without undoing the battery cables? Or is there not enough room to lift up the battery while still connected? Will undoing the cables cause any issues?

The cables will likely not leave you enough slack to raise the battery enough. I just swapped my battery out a few weeks ago.

Unplugging the terminals will reset your radio and emissions monitors.

Start the car. The alternator will keep it running and the car won't reset. Remove the cables, lift the battery and swap out the blanket.

As Brett said, it really isn't needed and serves no purpose where you live. Take it back for a refund.

Nothing duck tape can’t fix. In all seriousness, it’s not needed as others already commented.

Mine is a 14 with 13,000 miles. It is a garage queen. I am in TX so my guess is heat is a factor. I don't wash with water so it hasn't been wet repeatedly.

Mine is at 13,112 miles now. It is a 2013. I expect it is dry rot. Ours has never seen rain, at least since we have owned it. No biggie. I have a replacement.
