What’s the longest you’ve ever let your car sit?

I was talking to a friend of mine with a 27,000 mile Mystichrome coupe and he told me his car’s been sitting for the past 3 years now. It’s in his garage, under a cover and a battery tender. He said he just lost interest and I asked, ‘why not sell it?’ and he said that he might regain interest so he’s just going to keep it.

How long have you ever let your car sit? Mine has sat for about 4-5 months during the winter season but that’s about it.

I think this year was the longest at around 9 months.

Between being crazy busy at work, some house renovations, and my garage being occupied with the other toy, I haven't had as much time to drive it this year.

My Roush and 03 Cobra vert normally sit for 11 months at a time. I do maintain registration and insurance on them.

So, based on TX law, I'm required to have them inspected annually. Otherwise they would probably sit even longer.

My 03 coupe I take out every 3 to 4 months just to drive it to work.

I haven't lost interest I just have too many cars to drive/take care of. Kind of a good problem to have I guess lol.

mine was down for the most part during a build for several years. I hit points where I didn't touch it for 3-4 months at a time.

The only way to get back into it, is to get the bitch out and drive out. I'll make plenty of excuses for not getting it out of the garage but I've been making myself get it out at least once a weekend and thoroughly enjoying it

Define sitting… :) Mine was on jack stands from June of ‘14 to Sept ‘20, with the exception of getting it back on wheels to push it out of our apartment garage onto a trailer and into the garage at our house. Even though we got it running, we still had various issues with it and finally just really had it initially sorted enough to really drive it over Memorial Day, so it really sat from June ‘14 to May ‘21. So, 7 years give or take. Finally had it dyno tuned July 2, 2021. Still working through some issues now, looks like I may have it sorted in the next few weeks I am hoping. I keep looking at Motorsports Reg at the upcoming track days and keep picking out track days that I will try to make it to.

The car sits from November through March every year for the past 17.5 years. Average mileage per year is around 400 miles.

As she sits right now.......

Mine sat all winter in southwestern pa then I got it out in March to get a d1 installed ran it 280 miles and blew two pistons. Ow it has been sitting since April 22nd awaiting completion of my rebuild. But on normal occasion it sits in the winter when weather is crappy and even then I start it and warm it to normal temp Atleast twice a month. Then from April to October I drive it maybe once a week weather permitting. Sitting too long is just as bad as driving too often in my opinion. My uncle has a 1985 Z28 that has been sitting for 25 years straight never seen the light of day. All I can say is good luck with that one.

Mine has been sitting since august ‘19 and will till I can get out of this smog nazi state as I got a retroactive state ref and I am not going to deal with that BS. Have been looking to move to AZ but no one there wants to hire anyone from cali; i’ve been turned down just for stating I live in California and I’m looking to move. Many places I am more than qualified for; I get it Californians are annoying… that’s why I’m leaving lol

Mine gets stored every winter for 5-6 months. I haven't driven it much this year. I have less than 200 miles so far this year.

Sometimes I take it out just for a 20 minute drive, because I feel it's bad for it to just sit.

I parked my car in August of 2016 and haven't driven it since. I really cut back on driving it at all once I moved from NC to San Diego in 2009.

Once I was no longer around my friends that shared the same passion for the hobby, my desire to keep moving forward stopped almost immediately. I suppose I had accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish with the car (800hp, 9 second ET, reliable) and didn't have much interest in messing that up.

To go north of 1000whp would require redoing everything (built motor, different trans, another rear end, bigger turbos) and I just couldn't get myself to commit to it. I've picked up some engine parts when deals presented themselves over the years and even moved over to Holley efi, but the car still sits on jackstands needing a days work to be roadworthy.

I did pick up a 2018 GT that has scratched my itch for fun.

What does you guys do for gas? I've always read that the gas goes bad.....I know it doesn't turn to water but....does the car rust away...does it rot? I'm wondering what happens.

as long as they're running, i never let them sit and drive them everyday. if they're down for repair, i work on fixing them asap so i can drive them again.

i think this past winter was the longest - i pulled the engine out of the vert for the first time, so it was down for about 3 months.

I drained my tank after it sat for years. I replaced the fuel pumps then also, and there was no rust inside the tank that I could see.
