I’m lying here in a hospital bed after an absolute weekend of pure hell. The asshole next to me is snoring like a wild animal, I’m in extreme pain regardless of the fact that I am on muscle relaxers, Norco and lidocaine patches. I hurt my back on Saturday morning picking up some gear at work, around a 65lb tote. I lifted it up and twisted while holding it somewhat away from my body. I knew better, but that’s how it happens. Felt something pop…game over

Got transported to the ER for the immediate pain and was given Ibuprofen 800 and asked if I wanted to return to full duty. Clearly not as I was hurting.

The next two days will turn out to be the worst of my life to this point as far as pain and just general discomfort. I was hurting on Saturday and Sunday during the day but it was tolerable with Aleve on board. Sunday night at 3 am I would enter a realm of hell I didn’t know existed. I got up to take a piss and my back was screaming. I went in to the office and grabbed the heating pad which was of course on the floor. When I bent down and stood up I experienced a pain I didn’t know was possible. I literally started vomiting from the intensity and broke out in a cold sweat, my ears started ringing, I was sure I was going to fall out. I managed to get two Tylenol and crawl back to my bed. From that point on I could no longer sit or lay down with out extreme pain in my left leg followed by numbness. My only relief was to stand. I debated going to the ER but toughed it out till the Tylenol kicked in.

Monday morning I called the Occ Health nurse and thanks to the holiday could not get in to a doctor till the end of the week. She advised me to go to the ER if need be. Monday went ok as I was up and around, the pain was there but nothing like the night prior. Monday night I was once again back in the 7th realm of hell. Extreme pain, causing me to shiver and shake. I text my mom about going to the ER but once again talked my self out of it as I wandered the hallways of my house literally the entire night unable to sit or lay down.

Tuesday I attempted to drive in to the fire station to start my light duty assignment and hopefully get in to see a doctor. Well the drive in finally broke me. I had to stop at my station at which point they loaded me on the rescue and transported me again to the ER.

I got IV morphine and had an MRI. Large portion of my L5 S1 disc is herniated pressing on my nerves, L2/3 and L3/4 are bulging.

I was admitted to the hospital, kept on the meds listed above full time till I can have a micro discetomy in the morning.

I’m 32 years old, athletic/body builder/bike rider. I did not see this coming, but my god what a nightmare.

I’ll update you guys after the surgery, I just needed to share my thoughts with someone as I’m lying in this Hospital bed listening to the asshole next to me snore….

That sucks.

I herniated a disc back in 2006. I was using a breaker bar and a 6' piece of pipe to loosen a crankshaft bolt on a Lightning. When it finally popped, my back popped.

I didn't have surgery. I chose to use a chiropractor first, in an attempt to avoid surgery. I went 3 times a week for the first month. Twice a week for the next month. Once a week for the last 2 months.

It was a slow, painful process, but it worked. More importantly, I haven't had a problem with my back since.

Hopefully, they get it done right the first time. Don't rush things; slow and steady.

Best of luck.

That sucks Ryan. I've got three herniated discs L2-4, bottom one is an extrusion that messes with the nerve to my left leg, which is no fun.

First injury was wakeboarding in 2009-10?
Second was football 2012ish
Third and fourth were both baseball

Stretching, learning how to properly get in and out of bed, and being more conscious of my posture while sitting and walking has helped me get through the days. I'm too young (in my non-doc opinion) to get cut and I don't want to have to get a second surgery by the time I'm 50 so, just kinda have to deal with it.

Definitely quit picking shit up off the floor for awhile.

Hope everything goes well from here forward and you can get some relief.

I’ve never hurt my back (try to stay conscious of actions that might jack it up) and horror stories like this are just one reason why I’m thankful.

Thats awful bro. Sorry to hear geeeeez smh. I too have experienced horrible back pain and unless anyone has experienced it themselves there is ZERO way for them to understand how awful it is!

Ur in for a very long and painful recovery no doubt! There is a reason back pain makes up more workers comp claims than ALL other body parts put together! Its no F-ing joke!

It doesn't take much to hurt ur back. My buddy was sitting on the train one morning when this woman wanted to sit next to him so he moved over in the seat to give her more room and that little hop from one molded seat to another caused his disc to slip and collapsed in agony on the train and had to be taken out via stretcher smh!

Doesn't matter if ur Fat, Skinny, young or old in perfect shape and can run the Tough Mudder in record time. NO ONE is immune from back injuries! So if ur back is good take EXTRA caution in what u lift or how u move. Ur whole future depends on it.

I wish you a full recovery. This is my worst nightmare. I have worked on my back at the gym my whole life to keep everything strong and I do a lot of walking which is good for the back.
I once just strain a lower back muscle and it was miserable. I couldn’t get comfortable no matter what I did. My trainer told me the worst thing for a back is being sedentary so after a day of pain and Advil I was back at the gym working out. It would loosen up after the workout and then the next morning was locked up again. Took about a week to get back to normal.
Good luck with all of this. I hope you recover fully.

Good luck with your recovery, I wish I could tell you things get better, they don't.
My hip Dr. after looking @ a March 2021 lower back MRI, described my back as JUNK.
Good days suck & bad days are worse..

Prayers up for you brother. You are pretty young to have such a bad injury. Did you have any previous trauma to your back?

I recently just had a similar episode. It was unlike anything I felt before. Rarely my back would spasm and lock up, maybe at least a handful of times. Seems like every couple years it wants to happen. But this time all I did was bend down to torque some wheel nuts. On the way up I heard a pop, and barely made it all the way up. After that the most horrible pain I felt in a long time. Lol. It’s been a couple weeks now and I’m at least 85% better. For a couple days laying, and sitting down was painful. Then standing become irritating as well. I’m not sure what happen but the muscle between lower back and glutes on both sides was in a huge knot causing all the discomfort. Serious back injury really is the worse. God speed on your recovery.

Get better soon Ryan. Back pain is the worst, I remember getting out of the shower one time and bending down to dry my feet and something happened I fell to the ground and was in excruciating pain. I got very lucky and it went away. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I know the pain my man. I have a L4/L5 herniated disc. Believe it or not, Yoga has helped me a ton. I would hold off on the surgery and see if you can rehab it.

Get better bud, did that to my L5 in the exact same manner as you described about your age as well. Two 50lb nail boxes and a slight bend and twist is all it took.

Mine will never recover, as it lost the moisture/elasticity the way it was described and has permanently narrowed my spinal cavity so too much exertion can easily inflame it.

That said, work on that core and take a couple ibuprofen before strenuous activity and it’s manageable. I’m not as fast as I used to be but I’m still able to do the same things, albeit with more care for my back in mind. They said I needed surgery and I declined, one day at a time and as suggested Yoga/stretching type exercises will do wonders.

I wish you a speedy recovery!

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. It’s been a very long day with minimal results. Surgery was postponed Till tomorrow. Neuro wanted to try steroids, prednisone and deca have done nothing so far. The pain is still absolutely insane and my left foot is completely numb, calf and ham are locked up, glute is on fire. Hopefully tomorrow brings relief.

I had no previous back Injuries that I’m aware of, with that said I have been on the fire department for 11 years so picking up 350lb patients and wearing 50+lbs of gear in fires certainly can’t be good for your back. I’ll update you guys as things progress.
