Jeep tries to stomp on Ford Bronco with new Wrangler Xtreme Recon SUV

Jeep tries to stomp on Ford Bronco with new Wrangler Xtreme Recon SUV

Go big or go home.

Jeep is launching a new variation of the Wrangler to claim all of the best-in-class off-roading benchmark dimensions just as the first 2021 Ford Broncos begin to roll into dealerships.

The Xtreme Recon package is an option for the four-door Wrangler Rubicon and Rubicon 392 that adds a 1.5-inch lift kit, 35-inch tires on 17-inch wheels and a 4.56:1 axle ratio. The Rubicons currently come standard with 33-inch tires and a 4.10:1 axle ratio.

The result of the changes is an SUV with a 47.4-degree approach angle, 26.7-degree breakover angle, 40.4-degree departure angle, 12.9 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford through 33.6 inches of water.

The last of those figures is .1 inch more than the four-door Bronco's maximum, which also has up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance and approach, breakover and departure angles of 43.2, 26.3 and 37.0 degrees, respectively.

Jeep hasn't announced pricing for the package yet, but the order books are open for deliveries beginning in August.

Jeep will also offer a new optional 4.88:1 axle ratio for the Wrangler Rubicon later this year that combines with the six-speed manual transmission to deliver a 100:1 crawl ratio to maximize torque at the wheels for low-speed driving on the toughest terrain.

The Bronco's best ratio is 94.75:1, which is achieved with a seven-speed manual transmission that has an ultra-low crawler first gear, which would have easily trumped the current Rubicon's figure of 84.2:1. It's available on models equipped with the $4,995 Sasquatch package, which comes with 35-inch tires and is either optional or standard on all two-door or four-door models including the $31,490 base trim, while the four-door Rubicon starts at $44,295.

This isn't the first time Jeep has tried to rain on Ford's parade. Last July, Jeep chose the day of the Bronco's reveal to announce the V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392, which is the first-ever V8 Wrangler and far more powerful than the top Bronco … at least for now.

Next up...The Bronco Raptor!

This ****er will be 90 grand.. watch

Not if you get the 3.6 Rubicon Unlimited with this package. The 392 Rubicon with this package will run about 78-80K. This package has been predicted to cost around 4500. You could get the manual Rubicon and get 4.88 gears. I'm willing to bet that the average cost will be around 60-65K because they don't sell nearly as many 392s as they do the other 3 engine options. People are blindly hung up on the 392 Rubicon. Majority don't cost 75K.

Jeep perfuming the pig. Only so many bandaids you can throw at an ancient rattle trap.

Why reinvent the wheel when the current one sells fine as is?

TBD when the real Bronco hits the lots in big numbers but Jeep sells those wranglers with ease, along with Dodge with their Charger/Challenger running super long in the tooth.

You aren't wrong. I had an aggressive argument with a guy at one of my son's baseball games about this. He was convinced that all Wranglers will start coming with the 392 and base models will be 70K. Even when showing him on on Jeeps site, he said well that is now. They haven't updated their site for next year. I'd wager he voted democrat, but we didn't touch on politics.

The top end of the offroad the world is moving to IFS , it out performs the ancient method by a long shot all around, including the rocks. Has yet to be seen in an OEM but Ford is just getting started.

And never will be. Remember, this is a Ranger with a different cab on it. Not some long arm bespoke trailer queen.

The SRA is tried and true. Not perfect, nothing is, but a great and proven formula.

Wow, Factory 392ci, 4.88 gears, and 6 speed manual?! Or are those all separate packages? Even if it's not available with the 392 the 4.88s and 6spd is a interesting factory option!

It's not just a Ranger lol. It was very loosely based on the Ranger frame, that is all. And don't be so sure about the never will be part, its already quite easy to accomplish in the aftermarket with very well mannered street ability.

The Bronco's will be doing everything Wranglers are doing $ for $ and then some

I currently have a JL Rubicon 4 dr. I have a Bronco Badlands 2 Dr with Sasquatch on order. Plan is to keep both. When the Bronco arrives It will be interesting to compare and contrast.

I like both vehicles. I believe the Bronco is better looking especially with the top off and the optional 35 inch tires. Not having the framed windows and not having a cross bar gives the Bronco more of a true open air look and feel.

I expect the Bronco badlands to be nearly as capable off road with better Mall Crawler looks. Time will tell. My JL has been literally flawless in its first 3 yrs and 20k miles.

the engine will be an upgrade in the Bronco. I believe the interior is a bit nicer in the rubicon and it sounds like the audio system is better in the Jeep.

in the end there are pros and cons to both. I would be happy with either vehicle but I will be blessed to have both (Once the Bronco actually arrives).
