I was looking at my Mystichrome this morning and I just noticed this paint chip. I am not sure if it was already there and I just noticed it now. Anyhow, should I just leave it as-is or apply some mystichrome touch up paint? I wonder how good of a match it would be. The paint chip isn't really noticable unless you look at it from this angle.

I would touch it up. That grey stands out against the MC in my opinion.

Just remember MC goes over a black base coat. So, hit the area with black and then put the MC touch up paint on top of it. It will still be noticeable when you look at it directly, but it should blend in when looking at it from a foot or so away. Meaning you will always know it's there, but others will never notice it.

I agree with this. The touch up paint never really satisfies but it will look much less noticeable than leaving it as is. I've tried a couple touch up kit products on my DSG and I personally think these touch up kits really aren't made for paints with metallic flake.

I wonder if the Mystichrome touch-up paint comes with a black base paint. Probably not, but it would seem a pair kit would make sense if the black base is needed before applying the Mystichrome touch-up paint.

TouchUpDirect has it in a pen/brush setup. #G6/M7099.
That would at least stop the chip edges from chipping more. As far as a perfect match? I don’t have a clue. But I’d try it for the reason mentioned.

If you end up ordering it can you post up if you get it? I've tried getting touch up paint in the past and have been told they don't/won't carry it.

I ordered some about a year back. It goes look better than the small chip but what I got was a lot darker. I did really work it in with some wet sanding and buffing as well.

The paint supply house near me said there's something like 7 shades of DSG out there. My 03 Mach and 04 Lightning were both DSG and there was a notable difference in them when side by side

Thanks. I just placed an order with them. I tried one of the local body shops I trust and they told me the paint requires a $500 paint toner and they can't make it in such a small batch for me. I wish the 3M PPF went up the entire hood but oh well

I still have six of the OEM G6, which I'm holding on to. I've compared these to a few of the Mystichrome paints offered out there and they are all pretty close.

When I was painting the 03 Terminator diecast cars I used to purchase my MC paint from Automotive Touchup.

2004 Ford Mustang Colors of Touch Up Paint

The paint was expensive (i.e. $250 for a pint. Yes a "pint"). I just checked and it is WAY cheaper now for some reason (i.e. like by half). So, if you need MC paint I suggest you pick some up now before it goes back up LOL.

I painted a MC diecast for a member here (@HPLouis) and he actually placed his diecast car on his MC Terminator and took a picture of it. it was almost an identical match.

So, I know from experience that Automotive Touchup's formula is good. And I had to get the black basecoat separately. It does not come as a kit.

I think becoming a hoarder is part of owning a Mystichrome. I have pieces of leather stashed away just in case. If I come across paint I'd definitely snag it.

It's the same for the car you painted for me. I put the model out when I show the car and when the sun hits them the flip is exactly the same on both cars. It's pretty cool really.

How long would that paint last if I picked up a quart or a pint?

I had their touch up paint for my older Mystichrome and it did a good job. I don’t have the car anymore so I don’t have a pic but I have a pic of the die cast on the Terminator.

Thanks Bob. I knew you put the diecast on display with your car during car shows, but wasn't sure how well it matched. Nice to know the flop is almost exactly the same. That "IS" pretty cool.....

Oh, and to your other question. So long as you keep the paint in a cool dry place it should last you a VERY long time. I'm talking years.

I have actually had old paint kind of dry up a little. I poured some reducer in it and it came back for use. The pigments always remain. The reducer and combiner are what makes it a liquid form, but they can evaporate. So, even if the reducer or combining agent kind of dries out all you do is add more reducer and it's fine.

Now, it cannot be completely dried out. If that happens then you need to throw the paint out.

I don’t use pens or touch-up bottles with brushes. They tend to leave a “blob” of paint. For my cars, I buy a can of spray paint from

www.automotivetouchup.com

The paints are always a good match, Mystichrome included. For chips, I spray the paint into the lid and apply it with a small brush. It is thinner/runnier than regular touch-up paint and allows you to fill the chip flush/level.

Regarding the black primer, I would not try to put any in the chip prior to filling it with paint. It will be more of a pain than what it is worth. The black will go up the “walls” of the chip and give you problems. If I was going to repaint a section, like a bumper cover or fender, I would absolutely use black primer. For a chip, I’d skip it and just fill with base coat paint.
