My name is Mike and I’m a veteran with PTSD. I never imagined how it would affect every aspect of my life: my career, my marriage, relationships with friends and family, and even just my desire to carry on living. Three years ago I did not understand PTSD nor could I empathize with anyone who had it, even though I’d been struggling with it since 2003. I hit bottom in 2019 and was well on my way to becoming a statistic. Having nothing else to lose, I finally reached out for help. I was surviving, but not thriving. Then I discovered Southeastern Guide Dogs and was matched with an 18-month-old yellow lab named Ryan in June 2020. My service dog’s awesomeness is only matched by the organization that provided him to me free of charge. They’re currently in the middle of their largest annual fundraiser, the Heroes Challenge, and Ryan and I were included in the making of their video.

Will you please help get word out? A gift to the Heroes Challenge at Southeastern Guide Dogs will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. (gifts made before June 30, 2021). If you choose to donate, please include “Mike and Ryan” in the comments section. This is strictly being done out of curiosity and I was not presented with an incentive nor am I receiving any type of compensation. If you want to go big, please send me a PM and I’ll get you in touch with the right people at Southeastern.

Thank you.

Mike

Great write up and thanks for sharing. I understand what you are going through. My 18 yr old son deals with PTSD do to a sexual aslt he endured as a 5 yr old in the school bathroom. It's a daily battle for him and his dogs has been a huge outlet for him

God bless and thanks for your service.

I wanted a service dog.. but I was told “ you can’t treat a dog like your best friend anymore. They have a job to be your service animal. Not your friend “

I’m sorry to hear that man. I really am, especially since it’s not true. These aren’t military working dogs.

Here’s us at the sandbar last year (ignore my awkward mid-step walking away stance)

mine isn’t military. Child hood stuff.

ive pondered it... hell I wish my current dog was cause her and I are VERY attached.

I couldn’t handle two dogs since it’s just me and I travel a lot. If I could
Bring her to more places it would help a lot...

it’s mostly why I drink so much.. but ehh it’s all good

I understand, believe me. That was one of the reasons I swore I'd never get another dog. I can't really use that as an excuse now. lol

Forwarded the info to the guys I work with (which is like a Jedi council Group), and is very pro these kind of things and a brotherhood that cannot be broken. I am sure some will donate as well. Especially with the matching money. We love our military and we love our dogs.

Win win.

Thanks again and this seems like an awesome cause.
Thank YOU. You’re worth it.

Thanks man! This organization really is amazing. The dog is free. So is the training. The food is free. Heartworm medicine is free. And they really do put their students first.
