I'm just getting ready to install the freshly rebuilt rear axle under my shelby and I picked up some Amsoil Severe Gear 75-140 for it but it doesn't say on the package weather or not it needs an additional friction modifier. My local Amsoil dealer said the old stuff didn't need it and he thinks thats the case with this but the old bottles said that it was incorporated into it.

Most high end oils like that don't require it, but if you don't like the way the clutches grab you can always pour a bottle in later.

Always start without and see how it feels. If it is locking up too much then add a small amount of friction modifier till it loosens up to where you want it. Keep in mind more lockup means more wear and eventual clutch replacement.

This, except when you pull the factory one for a rebuild you just install a Torsen.

Seems like some mixed reviews. I wish my suspension didn't make it so difficult to add the modifier afterwards but theres no room after it's all up underneath the car. I changed out the gear set for a fresh set of 3.73 gears because my last set had horrible gear whine. I went through the rest of it and also welded the axle tubes while I was at it. I also got mixed reviews on rebuilding my stock limited slip or adding a locker but most of the people said the stock setup will hold up better then the torsen or trutrac and going to a detroit locker would be the stronger option but for my car that is mostly street driven at 700 rwhp the stock carbon fiber clutches would be fine.

i bought some and i read on their website that if you have an lsd you should add their friction modifier as well, which kinda sucks considering how expensive it is.

Well there you go. It makes sense when you consider how many limited slips are being manufactured today. Seems like the electric locker has taken it's place on trucks these days.

well I took the car out for the first drive tonight with the fresh rear end and I left out the additive to see how it was without. I did some tight figure 8's in a parking lot and a little town driving and out for a good 30 mile drive. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary like a shutter or anything like that...it worked great! Should I leave the additive out??

Yes it appears to be working well I just want to make sure it's going to live a long time. I don't want excessive wear on the clutches from not adding it although I was thinking less slip meant less wear on the clutches and that was better.

Additional friction modifier is not needed unless you get chatter in a turn; adding an extra bottle just to do it reduces the ability of the diff clutches to engage.

I've had Severe Gear with no extra friction modifier for over a year with zero diff chatter.
Try it without it first...

Friction modifier adds additional slipperiness to the oil which allows the clutches to slip without chattering. Friction modifier reduces the coupling ability of diff clutches so run the minimal amount necessary to eliminate the chatter in a turn and no more.
