Its not just chips. L&M engine says they pride themselves on building an engine within 3-6 weeks. Now they say they have engines sitting there since November waiting on parts!

This has nothing to do with whoever is the President. This issue is effecting all automakers, world wide.
Right.
Because we had a real president named Trump that wanted to put America first and bring manufacturing back home especially from chyna and now we got this illegitimate puppet of a president that wants to make Beijing great again.

Nice try. Thanks for playing playah.

Major supplier here. My company co-owns a few plants and companies in China (as much as you can, I guess).

Not sure I'd call any of Trumps policies pro-American manufacturing. He protected the steel industry, but everyone else got the shaft. Nothing financially was extended to us to bring it all over here. All the tariffs did was make our goods 25% more costly. He didn't close the cost gap in moving our production here. Taxes, red tape, and unions would absolutely balloon our production costs.

Bidens been no better. If he finalizes a corporate tax hike but doesn't touch tarrifs, a lot of companies you know and love in the Automotive world are going under. Spectra Premium is one which just went bankrupt. MOOG is on its last leg. Quite a few brands are hanging on by a thread.

Pro-American Manufacturing policy didn't exist with Obama. It didn't exist with Trump. And it doesn't exist with Biden. They're just here to collect more tax revenue. They know it's too expensive to produce certain goods here.

I'll happily be a liberal democrat before I'm the POS that attacks other members children. Your ethics/code/conduct on here speak for themselves as to how we should all value your opinion.

Why doesn’t someone from Ford over at China walk over from the Mach E Mustang plant...that’s in China and tell the chip makers in China to make more chips?

I hate how dependent we have become as a country on countries that hate our guts. And we keep sending more production over there! Makes me mad.

A local car salesperson posted on FB yesterday that if you want to get a truck, get it now. What they have their lot (10% of their usual number) is all they foresee until fall. And most of what they have are the lesser optioned ones.

The chips themselves take 6 months to make from start to finish. And getting the machines that make them can take even longer. The auto industry mostly uses older, less advanced chips, which means the machines to make them aren’t being produced anymore. So people are searching the country for old chip factories that shut down to get their equipment. Prices for that used equipment shot up over the last 6 months. That’s not good news for automakers.

As far as not making these chips in America, didn't Trump try to make this happen with Foxconn? Nothing clearly came of it.

"President Joe Biden is aware of the issue and the threats posed by relying too heavily on foreign manufacturing. As part of Biden's $2 trillion infrastructure plan, there's a $50 billion allotment for domestic chip manufacturing incentives.

In a Monday meeting, Biden said the key to navigating the current chip shortage crisis is to invest in the country's chip production.

"We need to build the infrastructure of today and not repair the one of yesterday," Biden said, according to NBC News. "The plan I propose will protect our supply chain and revitalize American manufacturing."

The US produces just 12% of the world's computer chip supply. Here's why it's trailing China when it comes to manufacturing and how it plans to get ahead.

Which will most likely be offset by Biden taxes on said chip manufacturers... How about trying to make the overall economic system more fair and competitive. Much better than a few handouts. Oh wait, we started to try that and people got hurt feelings...

Automakers and suppliers have to compete on a global level. In many cases, it makes sense to have a plant located in a different country because they have better trade policies. Even if these plants were somehow coming back, it would be years before they would produce a single chip.

You may have a point, but you seem to think there would be an immediate change in four years? Can barely build a large scale plant in that amount of time, let alone see benefits. This took 40 years to screw up and will take a long time to fix. Changing the trajectory is what is most important, but that doesn't really make a headline.

Worked at Moog during my college years over 20 years ago. They didn't really make too much themselves back then and I imagine it is even less now. I generally can't stand many democrats, but Obama certainly didn't start this. Hell, probably really goes back to Nixon.

Is this conjecture or do you actually have proof this will be happening?
Well given that I said "will most likely" and not "has been", I would say it is conjecture. It is 3rd grade comprehension here in the states. Or at least it used to be.

I definitely do think there's some level of urgency for suppliers and manufacturers of all goods to make the change. Or at least, find a way to mitigate the artificial costs imposed by shitheads in Washington. So I feel like we'd at least have seen announcements/plans in Ts 4 years, or even within Biden's rehashing of the topic. Haven't really seen that though. Nothing mind blowing in terms of manufacturing moving back home.

I'm all for it but there's a lot of costs incurred on American soil that aren't on the other side of the Ocean. Need to solve those first before we bring a widget that costs 5 bucks in China over here and cost turns into 25. That won't do anyone any favors.

You seem to think people in here think we can make some changes and fix this immediate chip problem. That isn't happening. May be a good time for companies to assess their supply chains though and be ready for plan "B" in the future. This won't be the last disruption. Doesn't mean all have to come back, as you say. Many manufacturers were caught with their pants down. They may learn from it, they may not.
