How to keep squirrels out of the yard?

Looking for some ideas on how to deter squirrels from my yard.

I'm having MAJOR issues with squirrels digging all over my rear yard and tearing up my newly planted grass.
There are areas that literally look plowed because they have dug it so much... At any given time there are 3-4 of the little shits running around back there.
I don't think my neighbors would appreciate me sitting out there with a .22 or paintball gun, and my wife would probably divorce me for it anyways...

Its a decent sized yard, so any repellant could get expensive.
Anyone had luck with fake owls or hawks?
I've seen trees with aluminum foil wrapped around the base. Not sure if that's for squirrels or bugs though.

Any ideas?

How about a high prey drive dog guarding the yard? Will shit all over the yard and also tear it up, but at least the squirly ****ers will be gone!
I've got a dog that tries like hell, but as soon as she is outside the little shits are up a tree and watching her.

Eliminating them won't do much unless you're only dealing with one or two.

First would be removing any sort of food sources for them. That's what draws them in. Walnuts, acorns, fruit, feeders, whatever, get rid of that if you can. That will be highly effective. If it's the grass seed that's drawing them in, you'll need a deterrent to keep them from eating it. Go with something that's got a lot of capsaicin- cayenne powder, or even oil based, and spread it all over the seed. They hate it.

Labradoodles go hard??? Lol

Nice pooch.

She's a first gen, so she seems to take after her monster of a dad chocolate lab.
I wanted a pudelpointer but didn't feel like driving to Nebraska to get one, so she was the closest thing we could find that looked like one. LOL

Gamo pellet gun or any high power pellet gun. Pretty fun target practice as well. It's almost like they get smarter after a few friends get whacked, hiding behind tree limbs when they see you.

In years pest I'd routinely see 5-6 every day, sometimes on our front lawn and others times out back near our wooded back property. I had a huge white pine and two other large trees removed from our front/side and since then, I don't see them much in the front, and fewer in the rear. I believe removing a home source helped, but because we have a lot of tree way out back, they're going to continue to be a nuisance in the back yard. They don't seem to dig enough to be a concern. But....I hate those buggers!
