Ford Mustang is the world's best-selling 'sports car' again

Ford Mustang is the world's best-selling 'sports car' again
Pony car is best-selling coupe for six years straight

By Gary Gastelu FOXBusiness

The Ford Mustang was the world's best-selling "sports car" in 2020, marking the second consecutive year it claimed the title, the automaker announced Tuesday.

The assertion was based on data provided by IHS Markit, which would not reveal what other cars were included in the tally to Fox Business.

Ford also did not respond to a request for comment on its competition, but also noted that the Mustang has been the best-selling "sports coupe" for the past six years.

An IHS Markit spokeswoman said that "coupe" is a subset of its sports car segment that "has 2 or 3 doors, but in exceptional cases may also have 4 or 5."

What is clear is that Ford sold 80,577 Mustangs around the world last year, which was down from 102,090 in 2019 but represented a sports coupe market share increase from 14.8% to 15.1%.

The Mustang was also the best-selling two-door American sports car in the U.S. at 61,090 units, followed by the Dodge Challenger (52,955), Chevrolet Camaro (29,775) and Chevrolet Corvette at (21,626).

Your mom
Camaro hasn't been competitive in its pricing for years, not to mention cheap interior and lack of any rear seat room has been cited by many, including myself, for not buying.

Impressive, considering no advertising.
Yeah, it is. Not that GM does any real advertising for the Camaro. Chrysler/Dodge, though, now THEY are big advertising wise.

Wow Camaro at 29k is pathetic.
Yes, it is. You know, when I think Mustang competition, I no longer think Camaro. I don't even think about 2020-2021 Camaro. It's like it's a distant past model. Hmmm, maybe that's prophetic. LOL.

Unimpressive numbers across the board. Clearly a shrinking segment.

Like it or not, the Dodge boys have got a winning formula. 14 model years running lol, with relatively small investment (when compared to full redesigns and regular updates), and still relevant in the category. Combined with their 4 door cousin, likely a very profitable lineup. Beats the hell out of a complete redesign ($$$) every ~10 yrs, only to see your sales fall off a cliff half way through the life cycle.

Agreed. They really shoot themselves in the foot every decade or so. You'd think they would make a more modular platform that allowed them to make small to moderate changes to the overall shape and form that ran them a good 2-3 decades. Then whether or not its facelifts every 3yrs to deeper fundamental design changes, the platform could easily adapt to said changes. But its probably a nightmare manufacturing wise to try to account for all those things up front when designing a new car.

Too bad Dodge doesnt past those R&D savings onto consumers though. At this point, Charger/Chally RT should be a $25k offering since they have more than paid off their initial investment/R&D on those platforms.

Are Challengers & Chargers or Camaros sold worldwide?

Chryslers design work to maintain the gen1 Challenger look since the relaunch has paid huge dividends for them. Very well played.
If I was a Dodge guy, I’d own one.

A pretty impressive stat.....over 60K hellcats have been sold since their introduction in 2015. Keeping ti simple. Leave the vast majority of the car the same, and give the consume all they really care about. We laugh at how bad these cars are, but it's genius business.

Must be a money printing press for them. Tons of scale (rest of the running gear as well). Incredible profits guaranteed.

Those numbers make sense with what I see in my corner of the world on the road. Is the Camaro still going to be discontinued in 2022 or 2023? I thought it was done after this generation.

Dodge definitely found a winning combo of straight line power and good looks. I kind of wonder if they are in a position of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." It's an old platform, but many people (myself included) still think it's the best looking of the 3. Ford and Chevy keep trying to push the cars towards the road course, but I would guess the majority of people buying them care more about going fast in a straight line.

With its dismal sales and GM's push to EV, it's all but certain the Camaro will soon be but a memory.

Personally I think the base mustangs suck ass, especially the V6, Ford just does this for volume sales. I wish Ford was more exclusive with the mustang platform. I know some would say "but the average Joe can't afford it"....well too bad. When there is too many of one model, it greatly reduces the mustang platform in my mind. Then you have idiots swapping hoods and front facia with a GT350 or 500, then add a Roush side skirts and call it a stang. There becomes no originality when
every 16year old kid has one. Sorry, I'm not for entertaining the masses of Ford, I wish Ford with get rid of V6, and only sell top model stangs.

And the Mustang would of died after 2009. There is a reason there is a bottom basement model for all 3 mfg. as without them you could slash those numbers in half and so lose the financial argument to keep them going. Also there is a little thing called CAFE, just ask Fiat how they have been forced to pay multi millions to the Feds because Chrysler can't even begin to fall in line with it, but they are cool as the Hellcat evertything. Not when you are paying close to 100 million a year when you really shouldn't to the Feds.

There is no current "v6" mustang.
