I have a Magnaflow catback on the car right now, with a Mac catless mid pipe, I most be getting old, I can no longer stand the raspyness of the sound with that current midpipe bought the car this way, so I have a stock mid with 20k miles on it if that, not sure if I bought of a 03 or 04 car, Does anyone have the setup like this? Whats' the sound like? Also will the tune need to be revised? and is the stock mid pipe exactly the same for the '03/'04 ? Thanks.

I believe 04 was a little different they used longer 02 wires. I’d run a high flow catted aftermarket mid pipe over a stock one. Just my two cents.

I can tell you from my setup which is in the ball park of yours. I have an 03, with stock header, 2.5" bassani highflow cats, 2.5" bassani X pipe, and 2.5" Magnaflow cat back (model 15644) the car is pretty quite, and I really like the sound, deep but not raspy. It had until about 2 weeks ago a 2.25" Flowmaster cat back and this setup is much quieter, actually surprised me. It will get a little noisy at WOT, but this setup is pretty quite and has no droning at interstate and highway speeds like the Flowmaster did. I could make some recordings and post somewhere or send to an email if youd' like.
I've never cared for super loud ATV,s bikes, etc. the Harley crowd has always puzzled me, not sure how they can handle riding together as loud as they are; to each his or her own.

I'm pretty sure the stock pipe is going to work and quiet it down....but you're going to lose a ton of performance over a quality high flow catted mid pipe like Magnaflow. Those factory mids are choking IIRC

With your mods, I wouldn't go back to the factory mid-pipe because of the performance loss @c6zhombre mentioned. You might want to consider an MRT catted mid-pipe (H-pipe). The sound is going to be different than an X-pipe. More classic Mustang. Just a thought.

I made a similar mid pipe change in early December. I have/had an o/r VRS 2.5" x-pipe with JBA catback. At 66yo I got tired of the raspy X noise and mind numbing drone. I removed the VRS and replaced it with an 04 oem mid pipe. The cabin is much quieter but I still get a lower drone at 1800-2200rpm. The 03 oem mid pipe rear 02 sensors are located farther back than the 04 mid so if you are using an 03 in your 04 you will need extensions or plug the rear bungs and turn them off in the tune. You may get a small torque increase down low and a small hp decrease higher up. For me, no tune adjustment was required.

I removed my stock mid pipe and replaced it with a upr x. I then had high flow cats welded on. Sounds great but not obnoxious and little drone.

Installing the stock mid pipe will quiet the sound a good amount. On my old cobra I had stock headers with a BBK O/R X pipe going into SLP Loud Mouths when I switched over to stock midpipe for smog reasons (California is the best!!) the tone came down a ton but still sounded really nice. Not loud and obnoxious as some ppl would say. Car felt restricted as well.

Old thread but hoping someone can help. Had my 03 dynoed today. Mods: 2.8 pulley, JTL CAI, Bassani o/r xpipe, Borla stinger catback. Put down 458hp / 474tq at 14lbs of boost. It's pretty loud, more than I'd like. Whines good but the exhaust drowns it out too much. Tuner said if I switched back to the stock catted h-pipe, it wouldn't need a re-tune. Is this correct? Also said I wouldn't lose any power by doing so. My buddy gained a good bit of hp by leaving his stock h-pipe on.
