We'll boys, it's getting real. Picked up a gen 2 short block. I don't plan on installing it until next year but I couldn't pass on the price. Cant wait to get this in there with the cams and pulley the lil 2.3 down.

Very nice!

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of deal did you find?

Is it worth a adjustable UCA upgrade on a mustang with still stock & 2 piece shaft? Been following your thread and see it’s worked well for you but was curious on a little more Analysts for a noob (me) whose wanting to learn :) thanks

It is a worthwhile upgrade but there are sacrifices. There will be more NVH but its not much more than stock. The real question is how much power are you making and what are your goals with the car? If your running all stock suspension I would recommend to upgrade the lower control arms first. Post up your set up and goals and I can better assist. Feel free to post in here or shoot me a message.

Few small updates now that the nice weather is back. A good friend of mine decided to go turbo so he sold me his Gen 3 TVS with ported lower intake for a deal I could not turn down. This is the non R version but I think it will still make plenty of power.

We started the gen 2 block swap today. My buddy has a lift so we dropped the entire K member with the trans attached. We fought the transmission cooler lines for awhile but once we had the right tool we were able to separate them. Outside of that everything was fairly straight forward other than having to fight the AC compressor a little to clear the body. I may have forgot to undo a ground wire on the firewall but we were quickly reminded it was attached when the body was lifting off :).

With work I am not sure when I will be able to get back over there to take it all apart. By next Sunday I hope to have everything stripped down so I can get the heads over to the machine shop. More pics coming, there is no turning back now!!

Had a little bit of free time tonight so we did as much as we could. We have everything pulled off the motor with the exception of the transmission. Our goal was to get the heads off so I can take them to machine shop tomorrow.

So far everything is looking perfect and all components look brand new as expected, this motor has 12k miles on it. For all the ethanol users I would advise on changing your oil out every few months. I always heard this in the past and never worried about it. I was changing mine once a year since the car was not driven that much and everytime I drove it I made sure the oil was up to temp. As soon as we pulled the valve covers you could really smell the ethanol inside the engine. After taking apart the secondary chain tensioner I did notice a tiny bit of ethanol crud in there but nothing to serious. Cylinder walls, cams, and intake ports were all spotless. I was surprised that we had ZERO oil residue inside the lower intake or intercooler, it was all squeaky clean. Previously I was running a Bobs premium catch can and it didnt let anything past it. The car now has a Fat Fab catch can that vents to atmosphere so no more PCV.

Here are a couple of pics, I'm horrible about taking pics while in the middle of it as my hand are always covered in oil. Taking tomorrow off and we will have the trans off and new engine on the stand by the weekend!!

Great work Riddick! What are you plans for the old short block?

My buddy gave me his old high mileage block to use as a core so this will go to him. He has a set of heads laying around so he will most likely slap them on this block and have it as a spare.

Agreed! Good work. Lots of work. Sheesh! I look forward to seeing the end result.

With the engine out of the car its really easy to work on, just time consuming.

I dropped the heads off this morning to be cleaned, resurfaced, and vacum checked. Ill post some more pics later this week, im going to go back over there tomorrow and detail the engine bay and tidy up a few things.

We have only spent a few hours on the car all week, been super busy and the next two weeks are going to be the same. However, we did manage to get the old block completely torn down so we are officially putting it all back together!

This morning we tried to reorganize a little before we get to far into assembly. The block is now on the engine stand and the oil pump, pick-up and pan are all installed. I picked up the heads from the machine shop on Friday, everything checked out good.... we resurfaced and cleaned them. Outside of that I cleaned up the engine bay a tad, removed the pad on the firewall and wiped everything down. Slow progress but still progress :).

All the parts are at my friends house so this week we plan to swap out the valve springs and at least get the heads torqued on the block. I will try to document some of the assembly progress but I often get in the zone and forget. Im getting excited now that we are assembling everything, with another 8-10 hours of work the engine should be back in the car!!

Today we swapped out the valve springs in one of my heads, will do the other one tomorrow hopefully. This is a budget build 100% so I went with the Boss 302 aka Gen 2 springs. These are really cheap and offer a few pounds more seat pressure vs the stockers. It's a fairly simple task but it takes awhile and you need patience.

I should of taken a better picture of the tool, the base attaches mounts to the same holes the cam caps go to. You are able to do 2 valves at a time so that helps it go a little faster.

We placed a rag under the valves to keep them from falling. Once the spring is compressed you are able to remove the retainer clips that latch onto the valve. Small flat tip screw driver and a magnet come in handy. Here is a pic of the clips. These are kinda tricky to get back into place but the more you do the easier it gets. The way Ford designed these its nearly impossible to install the spring, retainer, or retainer clip wrong..... they will only go on one way.

Assembly continues! While I was wrapping up the second set of valve springs my buddy was prepping the block for the heads. The heads are now on the engine but we still need to torque them down. Here are a few pics of the progress. A few of the pics came out crappy, I had grease on my camera lens.

It's been over a week but we are back at it. Last weekend I went up to OKC to get a new car trailer and this week has been busy so far. We spent 3 hours on the engine today and made great progress. Cams are in, engine is timed, and we have most of the accessories on. We have it all taped up because we have to grind part of the block for the Gen 2 VMP lower intake manifold to clear (the S550s ones sit lower in the valley). I think I mentioned this earlier but I picked up a Brett Barber ported lower with the VMP flow mod. Engine is just about ready to be mated back to the trans and put back on the K member.

I forgot to add a few minor details to my last post. In case anyone was wondering the car has MMR head studs, MMR cam cap bolts, and ARP cam phaser bolts. I don't have a preference on brand, in my opinion ARP and MMR offer great products, torque to spec and SEND IT.

Fresh L&M intake cams..... bling bling

Intake valley works perfect as a place to store tools during assembly.

You're gonna mate transmission to engine then drop in together? We just did stall so let me know if you have any questions on transmission install.

Yeah, we will put it on the engine and place it on the k member outside of the car. We have a home made pallet on casters that supports it all. Once all back together place it under the car and lower car on the drivetrain.

Over the years we have learned with engine changed it's easier to drop everything with the k member. Seems like more work but it make the process easier. We even take the main harness out with the engine.

Hopefully I don't have to reach out but I have your number just in case.
