Keep the anti-siphon if you can. It also helps keep some pumps from overflowing the tank when filling up. #beentheredonethat I wish I had seen this sooner. Sometimes some WD40 or penetrating lube is needed to break the line loose. Had to do that the first time I dropped the tank on my 01.

I've never loosened the filler neck, but I have usually sprayed the donut/filler with silicone or WD40 to get things to slide easier. I would recommend doing that when you put it back together. Makes life a lot easier.

If Shurur can't find his line shoot me a PM. I still have the one from my 01. And it was Zinc Yellow.

Also did you test old pump ?

last two fuel pump issues I’ve worked on were both an issue on main power line short.
Both had to have a new wire ran from relay to pump

strange

2008 dodge caravan

our tundra had crank no start
2010. issues with rodents eating wiring harness
Ate the key sense wire at pcm

Your supposed to use the old pump filter (small sock) and attach it to the new pump (Deatschwerks) How do you remove the filter from old pump? I could try and pry it or yank up on it but dont want to break it, so I would like to know first what works.

It should just pop off.
The pump comes with a new filter..as I recall...and it was the wrong size.

I would put a new filter in.
I ordered one off ebay...maybe amazon...forget.

I have an extra filter, as I save everything.
It is shorter than OEM, so will be easier to install back in to the tank.
I will send it out this am with the fuel line.

Anyone care to comment??

You're right. It's held on by a metal ring. And it usually feels like you're going to break it of you try to remove it.

But also like you said, it should have a new one with the new pump. Either way I'd go with a new filter as well.

Deatschwerks came with the larger filter that attaches to the basket but not the pump filter. In their instructions they say to use the old filter and just pop it on, but they dont say if the old one will just pop off or how. Old filter is clean and in good shape it wouldnt bother me to reuse it.

semi thread jack, but on a related topic...is there any magic to getting the driver's side tank strap bolt off and on? On live axle versions it looks easy, but with the IRS in the way I did not have a good time with it yesterday.

That one is partially obstructed, all you need is a 3/8 drive 1/2" swivel (universal joint) socket and a long extension. ----1/2" fits snug cause Its actually a 13mm but I already had a 1/2 swivel, another thing that works is a 3/8" wobble adapter with 13mm or 1/2" socket attached.

Well it was the fuel pump,---- im up and running, but only after major problems with the fuel line connector on the fuel tank. Like many others getting that quick connect off and on is ridiculously hard to deal with. As I have discovered there is a reason for it and there is a solution that I will do a write up about in the future. In the end i was so lucky that the fuel pump failed while engine running in my driveway and not miles from home..

good deal.
Funny I had done the filter on our explorer

one side pop right off the other was a pita
I had to force the tool in1 side at a time with a pry bar than it just popped off

Tried plastic tool
Tried aluminum tool
Than the scissors style worked

Timely thread. I tried to start my '99 today after sitting in an enclosed trailer all winter. No sound coming from fuel pump. Haven't checked for power to the pump yet but I'm guessing it's the pump (again). This will be the second time the pump has been replaced and the flippin car doesn't even have 6000 miles on it. Had a dealer replace the first one under warranty and the car has less than 1000 miles (but obviously many years) since then.

Time isn't kind to a car that sits.

I got lucky. Started my 01 the other day after sitting outside all winter. All it needed was a new battery, which I new it needed when I parked it for the winter. Glad you got your car fixed. Nothing I hate worse that something not working.

True, so true.

I dropped the tank yesterday afternoon and was actually able to get the hat out of the tank and the pump out of the hat without disconnecting any fuel lines. I also didn't have to disconnect the filler tube from the tank. I have the car on ramps and only dropped the driver side of the tank. Unfortunately, the in-line filter is another story...

The best price I have found for the DeatschWerks 340 pump (kit p/n 9-305-1032) has been $126.99 w/free shipping at RCAgarage.com

BTW, if you do it this way it IS necessary to remove those three screws inside the fuel filler door, otherwise the fuel filler tube cannot twist enough inside the rubber boot that is attached to the trunk floor to allow the tank to angle down on the driver side.

Pump came early this afternoon. Just came back from about a ten mile test drive. No issues. Worst part of the whole process was that tank strap hanger bolt buried behind the IRS cradle. Not one of Ford's better ideas.
