We are in the market for a new Explorer XLT 2.3 eco boost. Im looking for advice 1. Is an ESP purchase worth considering? 2 Which damn plan would most recommend? I am not a warranty person myself but this is also my first new car purchase and i am hoping to have this car around a while. Thanks

It depends if you ever use it or not. If you don't, no not worth it...if if you do, it is.

Personally with all of the modules and what not on these cars, it's worth it.

If you get anything stick with the Ford ESP, when I was at the dealer it was the best plan out there. Also keep records for everything, because if something were to happen they will ask for receipts for o/c and maintenance.

I have read on Exolorer forums about dealerships selling ESP at $200 over cost. Both of you above being involved with dealerships, have you seen or heard of this?

I was a service advisor for a couple of years and yes, if you plan on keeping your vehicle past the base and powertrain warranties, the ESP plans can be very useful. A couple of recommendations:

1) Always go first party. The Ford ESP is significantly more convenient for both you and the dealership. 3rd party companies often cover less and want extra verification/proof before they authorize a claim.

2) Ford’s Wheel and Tire Protection Plan is one of the best values in the auto industry. It cannot be purchased after the fact. Only at the time of vehicle purchase. But it covers pretty much anything outside of normal wear and tear. It even covers aftermarket wheels and tires up to a certain size (28” maybe?). If the puncture is patchable, repair is covered. If not, replacement is covered. I got 7 years of coverage for roughly $700 IIRC. And it’s refundable (prorated of course) if you decide not to keep the vehicle longer than the contract. I’ll never buy a vehicle from a Ford dealership without it.

Like it has been said, depends on if you use it or not and how long you plan on keeping it. I have had customers where their first repair, it paid for itself. Stick with the OEM and well named warranty companies like Fidelity, AUL, Zurich, etc. I also have seen the tire protection plans come in handy and can pay for themselves.

As involved as that water pump replacement is, I can't imagine what it would cost Ford to recall all the Taurus', Edge/MKX, Explorers and Flex's with the 3.5 V6. A truly shitty design anomaly with these engines.

Yes, I am one of those buy it and drive it until the wheels fall off. I will go with the ford ESP, especially with the eco boost. Ive always had good luck with tires, that one might take some convincing to see the value.

We had a good number go out but it was within the warranty period. I’ve only replaced a couple outside warranty. One was destroyed and the other Explorer was smelling like rearend fluid after driving, there was a tsb to rebuild it.

We've got a '19 Explorer Sport. I was going to change fluid and install the brass fitting/tube like this video:

It would be a good idea to do that, there is less than a quart of fluid in there and it’s right next to the cat. I’m sure it gets broken down quickly.

The dealer we bought our Sport from does free oil changes so I asked about servicing the PTU just because of that reason. Of course he said that's not something they do...

I have had the fluid changed twice by a good friend who is a Certified Tech, and I have recently picked up the extraction pump (no drain plug) that I need to do it myself. I bought more fluid today and plan to do it again soon.
