Hey humans,
Ive recently blew a hole in my driver side valve cover and wanting to pull motor out entirely to check more internally. Ive never pulled a motor before but seeing from my best friend "youtube" seems like all you do it unplug wires, drain oil, and coolant. Any input or tips would be greatly appreciated! also would it be better to unbolt the trans or leave attached to motor?

For a first timer.
I highly suggest you follow the manual.

It is a very easy job, how ever it can also be a nightmare fast.

But knowing what goes where we also find things done wrong.

As to pulling motor.
Thats a debate on its own

Up/down
With or without trans

Its what works best for you.

Only tip thats i have.

When they talk about timing and marks ,left and right..

For someone who doesn't know you will set timing backwards

Left is drivers side
Right is passenger.

I seen a guy do it on a 5.4.
No wonder it didn't run well

I should have clarified, I'll just be pulling motor out myself instead of having shop do it. Then I'll send motor into shop for them to tell me what's wrong with it internally

i did this for the first time a couple months ago on my 04 cobra. i bought a hoist off of craigslist and it worked out fine even though i have a pretty low ceiling. i only have hand tools and a few jacks. i didn't have to remove the hood even though i thought i would need to. the reason i pulled it was i needed to replace one of the chain tensioners, but it was nice because i was able to replace all the gaskets and lots of other minor things while it was out.

on a n/a car it might be easiest to remove the intake manifold so you can get one of those bars that goes into the valley. trying to attach bolts to the sides of heads is a pain on the pass side. good luck!

I have a 2.1kenne belll non intercooler version so I'ma need to see where I have to unbolt it so I can see the valley and hoist it upwards.

If you don't have one, get a wrench like this for removing one of the bolts that holds the power steering pump:

I've always pushed the hoods to 90 degrees when I pull the engines. Plenty of room to get everything out that way. For the T56 I unbolt the trans from the bellhousing, but leave the bellhousing connected to the engine when I pull and install it. It's easier to deal with the starter and such with the engine out IMO.

I would pull the blower and lower intake and then use a load leveler bolted to the heads. You can pick on up at Harbor Freight relatively cheap.

Pull the blower and buy a motion raceworks lift plate and hoist it out from the top. Grab painters tape and a sharpie and label every connector

I'll keep that in mind once I start working on it. If you guys come up with any other tips don't hesitate to tell! Where can I get the race lift plate?

I recently pulled a Fox engine, I have a transmission jack, so I split them, vs pulling all at once.

Get your self a hood prop, or cut a piece of wood to get the hood open way past the prop rod.

Also you will need the fuel line coupler tools.

I shredded a chain tensioner in my Cobra and had to pull the engine. I pulled it from the top but I have a tubular k-member. I removed the hood and the cowl panel to do this. I also pulled the transmission first. I removed the blower and lower intake, radiator and the coolant reservoirs.

It wasn’t too bad. That was even with long tubes.

Yeah I'm thinking detach the trans and leave bell housing alone and pull from top with the face plate if I can get ahold of one

I did head on that side over fender with long tube header.

brake booster is really easy to move

and a few have just tilted engine to pull cover

nice hole.
I had cam gear shatter on mine
Opposite cam
Main chain was still intact
