Tesla loses ground in European battery EV market
  • Tesla's (TSLA +5.8%) share of the European electric vehicle market deteriorated further in the first month of 2021, after losing market share in 2020, according to automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt.
  • The U.S. electric car maker delivered 1,619 battery-powered vehicles to 18 key European markets in January, representing a 3.5% share of all battery EVs registered that month, Schmidt said. That's down from the 1,977 vehicles it delivered in January 2020, which at the time commanded a 5% market share.
  • Tesla's 12-month rolling volumes have fallen behind Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMTF +3.7%) and Kia, which are now the third most-popular EV group in Europe.
  • In 2019, Tesla sat at the top of European EV charts, delivering 109K vehicles that year, or 31% of the region's battery-EV market. In 2020, Tesla fell to 13% of the European market, falling behind Volkswagen Group (OTCPK:VWAGY +0.3%), and the alliance between Renault (OTC:RNSDF +0.2%), Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY +1.3%), and Mitsubishi (OTCPK:MSBHF -0.5%).
  • China, meanwhile, has become the world's largest market for electric vehicles , with 179K battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered there in January vs. 110K in Europe.
  • Other EV companies: (NIO +8.9%), XPeng (XPEV +4.0%), Byd Company (OTCPK:BYDDF +10.8%), Stellantis (STLA +3.0%), Daimler (OTCPK:DDAIF +0.3%) and BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY +0.7%).

Volvo to go fully electric by 2030
  • Swedish automaker, Volvo Cars (OTCPK:VOLAF) plan to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles, including hybrids, and only sell all-electric cars by the end of 2030.
  • "To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future – electric and online," said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive. "We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment."
  • Last year, the company launched its first fully electric car, the XC40 Recharge and later today the company will reveal its second fully electric car, a new model in the 40 Series.
  • By 2025, automaker aims for 50% of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids.
  • About 2.5M electric vehicles were sold worldwide last year and industry analyst IHS Markit forecasts that to increase by 70% in 2021.

California city becomes first in U.S. to ban new gas stations
  • Petaluma, California - a city of 61,000 residents and 15 square miles in size - has become the first in the country to permanently halt the construction of new gas stations. The legislation will also outlaw new pumps at existing stations and streamline the process for adding more EV infrastructure like electric charging bays and hydrogen fuel cell facilities. The new prohibition is part of Petaluma's plan to completely phase out carbon emissions by 2030, though other environmental groups (like CONGAS) are pushing for a ban on the entire Sonoma County, which includes Petaluma and eight other cities.
  • "The goal here is to move away from fossil fuels and to make it as easy as possible to do that," said D'Lynda Fischer, the city councilor who introduced the measure. "Right now, we have existing fossil fuel stations, and what we want them to do is add [electric vehicle] chargers and create another source of fueling people can use."
  • Bigger picture: There are an estimated 450,000 brownfield sites in the U.S., or areas where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance. According to the EPA, approximately one-half of them are thought to be impacted by petroleum, much of it from leaking underground storage tanks at old gas stations. The sites "blight the surrounding neighborhoods, threaten human health and the environment and can contaminate groundwater."
  • Outlook: While the latest move is taking place at the grassroots level, there are other developments happening at the state level in California. Last year, the state banned the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035 and will require 75% of heavy trucks sold locally to be electric by that date. There are also plans to build an electric highway along the Pacific Coast. A host of policies are also being prepared at the federal level, like the Biden administration's $2T climate and infrastructure plan, which could boost renewables and other sustainable stocks.

And so it continues. The demise of the fossil fuel cars and gas station. Sounds like in a few short years, traditional fossil fuel gas station pumps will be limited and hard to find, replaced by electric charging bays.

I'm not worried about it. There is a new one being built soon in my city to make sure we have one at every intersection.

I'm talking about the future. But not all that far down the road. If you don't think that auto manufacturers moving to all-electric in the future isn't going to reduce the number of gas stations dramatically at some point, good luck with that. When demand drops, and it will at some point, many stations won't be able to stay open and pay the lease and other fees.

The Jeep Wrangler Islander is ready to hit the beach

jeep-wrangler-islander.jpg

Jeep-renegade.jpg

Jeep is back on island time.

The automaker has revived the surf-themed Wrangler Islander model after 11 years.

The beachy 4x4 is essentially a Wrangler Sport S with the 17-inch wheels and rock rails from the Wrangler Rubicon that features islander badging, a "Tiki Bob" decal on the hood and Surf Blue stitching on the upholstery.

A variety of paint colors are available along with an optional white three-piece hardtop and several Islander-themed accessories, including a Tiki Bob spare tire cover. Prices start at $34,865 for two-door models and $38,365 for four-doors and the Islander can be equipped with any of the Wrangler's gas or diesel engine options.

Jeep is also expanding the Islander trim to the Renegade subcompact SUV with a similar visual treatment that starts at $29,170 for a front-wheel-drive example and can be ordered with white roof accents as a no-cost option.

Both Islanders are technically limited edition models, but no cap on production has been announced.

I think we will be okay in the next "few short years". Long term though probably - I think we have a good 20 before we have to go out of the way for a gas station...

I am getting the oil change done on my company vehicle. I am actively listening to the service person tell a customer it is normal for the 2.4 L, not sure what Mopar vehicle, to burn 1qt of oil for every 1k miles because it is a fuel efficient engine.

Lol, WTF?

General Motors extends U.S. production cuts due to chip shortage
  • General Motors (GM -1.2%) says it will extend production cuts at three North American plants and add a fourth factory to the list due to the global semiconductor chip shortage.
  • Importantly, the extended cuts do not change GM's forecast from last month that the chip shortage could cut up to $2B from earnings this year. The automaker also didn't back off CFO Paul Jacobson's comment last week that chip supplies should return to normal rates by the second half of the year.
  • Also in GM world today, Cruise is reportedly looking at autonomous vehicle startup Voyage.

Why am I not surprised. Someone needs to have the balls to say that the name is important to the brand and WON'T be changed. I'm waiting for someone to complain about the Ford EXPEDITION name because.....well, it recalls painful memories of pioneers encroaching on native lands through Go-West expeditions. Silly? There was a time I'd choke on my laughter over the silliness of such a thought. Today? Nothing is beyond the realm of the cancel/woke society. Once they see the government and business bend to their demands, the floodgates open to every whim and fancy under the guise of "hurtful past behaviors" and "racist damage claims".

Volkswagen to double target for European EV market share
  • Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY -0.4%) forecasts fully electric vehicles will account for more than 70% of its total European vehicle sales by 2030, compared with a previous target of 35%, it says as it unveils its "Accelerate" strategy.
  • "With Accelerate we are increasing the speed on our path to a digital future," says Ralf Brandstaetter, who heads the Volkswagen brand and also sits on the company's board.
  • VW's namesake brand will still deliver an operating profit margin of at least 6% as of 2023, Brandstaetter believes, even as battery cars generate slimmer returns and the company steps up the pace on investments in electrification and digital services.
  • In China and the U.S., Volkswagen forecasts the share of fully electric vehicles it sells to rise to 50% by 2030, aiming to head off rivals including Tesla to become the world's leader in electric vehicle production.

LG Chem on the hook for world's most expensive EV recall
  • LG Chem (OTCPK:LGCLF) has agreed to be responsible for a majority of the cost of a recall of electric vehicles tied to the risk of battery fires.
  • The 1T won ($890M) recall covers 81,700 Hyundai Motors (OTCPK:HYMLF) vehicles sold in South Korea, the U.S. and Europe.
  • The recall is especially costly due to the need to replace the entire battery assembly. Hyundai's operating profit was cut by 34% to 2.39T won due to the recall and LG Chem lowered its operating profit by 555B won to 1.8T won.
  • The recall is being called the world's most expensive electric-vehicle recall to date.
  • In the EV sector, investors were put to the test last week.
