Got a couple questions:
-Where can I buy shims? Do the shims go inside the bearing cup (against the TOB sleeve) or on the rim of the bearing cup against the case (where existing race is)?

Second, the input shaft tapered bearing has a lot of play compared to the counter shaft bearing.
-Is it normal to have a lot of play in that bearing? Or should it be replaced and what is a good replacement part #?

I took the front case cover off to replace my Retainer Sleeve and noticed a misaligned race/shim:

That Tremec service manual def helps. Found some shims on lethal performance. I will leave the bearing as is for now.

That race and shim definitely doesn't look right. It looks like the race was spinning inside the housing which is not good. It may have had too much endplay allowing it to spin. I just pulled my trans out to do the sleeve and 26 spline input shaft and it definitely does not look like that. I have the part number for the input shaft bearing and cup race at home. I will post it when I get home from work if you still need it.

I'm currently in the process of doing some upgrades to my T56 and I found these two links very helpful.

^^ @Chrome98Cobra are you upgrading your input shaft? I have been researching for days trying to find out how much preload should be set on the new shaft and bearing. I know the specification states .000-.002 of endplay but I just don't feel that's right. In my experience, all tapered roller bearings always have a preload. Any input on this?

I am. According to the service manual, they call for .000-.002 endplay so that's what I'm planning on doing. I didn't feel any endplay on my 10 spline input shaft when I removed it so I'm going to try getting the 26 spline at .000.

How much play do you guys get on your input shaft tapered bearing? The manual doesn't mention replacing it if there is play in it. The outer cone holding the needles is the part that has freeplay, but the inner race is pressed on.

For the endplay measurement, I plan on running to the local Harbor Freight and getting these two:

@ERod123 the bearing itself will have some "looseness" to it. That is normal. However, if it seems like the rollers want to come out of the cage you might have an issue. Pay more attention to the wear pattern on the cup race and rollers. Look for any gouges, scratches, discoloration or pitting. That would indicate a problem. A new bearing is not that expensive so you might want to consider that for some peace of mind. You will definitely need the dial indicator (Top tool pictured) to measure endplay. The micrometer (bottom tool pictured) will be used for measuring shim thickness when trying to reach the specified end play. Hope this helps.
