Filling up at the Gas station is wonky

So, weird problem I've had since i shipped my car to where i am at now. Previously my car sat for a year and occasionally moved.

So filling up your car, you put the handle into the tank and press the little lever in to hold the trigger for you. Usually it kicks out when the tank is full and everyone's happy. My car for some reason will take about a gallon and pop the lever out indicating that the car is full.
I have tried twisting the nozzle to the left, right upside down, everything to change the flow and get it to fill up on its own and it always kicks it off after a gallon or two.

What else is there, I'm guessing emissions wise, that is causing fuel to flow so slowly into my gas tank? Thank you

There is a spring loaded plunger at the end of the filler neck inside the tank. Basically it caps off the filler neck after your done filling up and also makes it harder to siphon gas out.

I believe the tank vents this was as well when you fill up. This could be at least partially wrong but I am sure someone will correct me.

My guess is that the spring is corroded from sitting or has jammed in some way and is not fully opening during fueling.

That bad part is that the tank has to come down and you'll at least need a new gasket to pull and inspect it. I don’t know of or see how you'd be able to shove anything down there to test it.

If you drop the tank make sure you have the good metal fuel line disconnect tools and replace your filter while your there. Also be cautious of everything your doing and work in a well ventilated area. Partially lowering the tank and siphoning out the gas through the fuel pump opening helps when fully pulling the tank.

it could be the rollover valve but it could also be the evaporative emissions system - plugged charcoal cannister, the valve going to it failed etc...

my problem is the opposite, by the time it kicks the nozzle off it over flows

Is this the only pump you have used since this has happened filling? Or other pumps?
I ask because I set up gas station pumps and underground tank replacements gas stations in my younger years. This was a common problem, the pump handles would be bad if they used the cheaper ones. So thought go for easiest fix first. Different pump.
Also as the others said about vent tube and think is most likely though. I just fixed this on Dodge truck last year. Yes different vehicle but all same system.

I was going to ask the same thing. There is this one gas station where the pump nozzle keeps kicking off. Takes forever to fill the tank. In my car, at the same station, no issue. This happens only at this one station. Other stations, no nozzle issues with her car. Weird.

No, it is my car. I've had the same issue after filling up my car before i shipped it from Texas and still doing it now that I'm in Hawaii. Once i track down this oil leak and install the headers in the front end ill jack up the back and try blowing out the tubes.
