You don't have to drop anything. But be prepared for a lot of cussing. Especially if it's the original. It might be worth spraying the fittings with WD40 or penetrating lube to get things moving.

This.

Just get the rear up in the air and you will have access to it. Also get your self a fuel line quick disconnect. I have done a few on new edges and SN95's, its not all that hard.

Side Note, I would put some goggles on if you are lying directly under it. Gas will leak out and it sucks getting it in your eye(s). Ask me how I know.

gonna be a pain for sure , I see with the IRS it’s harder to get to then solid rear cars. Havnt tryed reaching my hand up there yet but I shined a mirror and it looks original. Hope to get that out soon, 20 years is a long while

You can remove the passenger side toe-bar to give yourself some room to work.

Also don't waste your money on the metal scissor type removers. I like the plastic coupler kind or the plastic slip-on type. Wear gloves so you can really put some pressure on it.

I hate those connectors so bad that the last time that I did the fuel tank, I spliced in a pressure fitting and ran nylon fuel lines, with brass barbs and oetiker clamps. I ran fittings to/from the filter to the FP as well. I just covered the nylon line with split rubber hose and a line of peratex with tie wraps.

Also get a good motorcraft or wix filter.

the harbor freight fuel line tools are LEGIT. I battled my filter for 2 days, no joke. Several different tools and methods. Then I bought the HF tool set. That fuel line popped off in 15 seconds LOL. Make sure you use the arrow pointing towards the engine when you install the new one.

just checked my local HF store a couple miles away has them in stock. I’ll go grab them when I’m going to do the job for sure

I agree w/all that has been mentioned already and add that I hated either seeing the connectors or touching the connectors but not both at the same time. Good luck.

I bit the bullet and dropped the rear of the IRS after effing with the filter clips for more than a day. Raise the rear, disconnect the exhaust tips and remove the cat back from the last hanger. Remove the long bolt from the frame and IRS on each side of the IRS and gently drop the rear with a jack under the pumpkin. You might need to unclip the ABS line to the brake calipers. It's basically the same process if you are replacing the rear springs. It was a little more involved but made getting to the filter much easier. ~180K, so I thought it was about time to replace.

Ha!!
I don't blame you. When I had my tank out, I changed out the lines and couplings back there with nylon type. The angle your hand has to hold the filter decoupler is not the best and the mechanism for the metal connects are tough to get loose for sure.

wow so you dropped the whole IRS ? I may need to do the same thing anyway. A lot of my bushings are shot and I want to replace them . Maybe I’ll do this.
Was it hard to do it? Time consuming?

He tilted it. If you have the stock bushings you'll need to loosen the front cradle bolts so it'll move.

I just dropped the rear of the IRS. Not really bad at all and mucho easier than trying to contort your arm and fingers to disconnect the filter.
