Hey guys maybe a silly question, but for those using a permanet trickle charger where did you end up bolting the wires to? I see the negative has a screw but not the positive...I know some have went to the fuse box on certain cars, I was worried of doing this and I also see three separate wires running to the fuse box...Thanks everyone

I use CTek. They have a plug adaptor that bolts into the positive and negative poles of your battery. From there, just use the connector to use.

If you are hooking this up on a 2020, make sure you use a chassis ground for the negative lead from the charger. There is a current sensor in the negative cable going to the battery, if you attach the chargers negative lead directly to the battery you will bypass the sensor and the cars computer will not be able to determine the condition of the battery.

This is correct, I hooked mine up to the battery positive and the ground on the strut tower. That’s part of the smart charging system Ford put in cars and trucks in 2008 I believe.

These cars use a lot of battery when just sitting if you don’t drive your car every day you should put a trickle charger on the car.

Gary, on my 14 I went directly to my positive and negative clamp bolts and plug directly in. I am not aware of the smart charging system. You sure this started in 2008? I have used it for 5 years and have had good battery life.

I have a 2013 and a 2020. I charge the 2013 through the power point in the dash. You can also charge the battery directly. The 2013/14 GT500's don't have the current sensor on the negative battery cable which is part of the Battery Management System on the 2020.

The 2020 requires you use a chassis ground.

Just in case you decide to disconnect the battery in a 2020.

Remove and Reinstall the Battery

To disconnect or remove the battery, do the following:
1. Apply the parking brake and switch the ignition off.
2. Switch all electrical equipment off, for example lights and radio.
3. Wait a minimum of two minutes before disconnecting the battery.

Note:The engine management system has a power hold function and remains powered for a period of time after you switch the ignition off. This is to allow diagnostic and adaptive tables to be stored. Disconnecting the battery without waiting can cause damage not covered by the vehicle Warranty.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cable terminal.
5. Disconnect the positive battery cable terminal.
6. Remove the battery securing clamp.
7. Remove the battery.
8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note: Before reconnecting the battery, make sure the ignition remains switched off.

Note: Make sure the battery cable terminals are fully tightened.

If you disconnect or replace the vehicle battery, you must reset the following features:
• Window bounce-back. See Power Windows (page 79).
• Clock Settings.
• Pre-set radio stations.

Maybe I'm confused about what you are saying here, but are you plugging into the car's port on the dash and not the battery?
If so, that will not charge the battery. The S550 platform Mustangs kill all power after the car has been shut off about 30 minutes.

The smart charging system has been around for awhile. Go to one of the truck forums they talk about discounting the smart system which is run by the computer. In short it disconnects the alternator to save fuel mileage. I copied this:
“That is part of the smart charging system. This allows the charging system to let the battery run down before the alternator turns back on to charge the battery. However it never fully charges the battery.

In other words they are saving fuel mileage by not running the alternator continuously. If you drive your car only a few miles at a time the battery will never get fully charged and will need replacement early and/or need to be recharged because it’s dead.

I drove my car for an hour once got back connected my battery tender and the battery needed charging. Over on the F150 and super duty sites they talk about how to disconnect the smart charging system. Batteries in the trucks are having to be replaced prematurely. I went through four ford batteries in my F350, so when purchasing number 5&6 I purchased a couple of yellow tops. Four+ years later still going strong.

I guess if you can save a 0.1 of a mpg that adds up for the EPA fuel economy requirements.”
The super duty site says when ford started this it has been at least 10 years.

If you don’t have a trickle charger you will most likely have battery issues.
