Playing around with getting a radar detector again...is the mighty V1 still the standars or is there something better these days?

I see they have a gen 2 out now

I've been using escort since early 80s
Escort's all I've had but they always end up false alarming laser more and more as time goes on. Maybe it was the Florida heat getting to them. Would have to send mine in every 12-18months to get repaired

Valentine is still one of the best out there, if not the overall top dog. I did A LOT of research, especially regarding false alarms, and bought a V1 in 2015. It’s been so perfect I couldn’t even begin to think about replacing it with something else.

The advantage that the V1 always had is that it was upgradeable. Not sure if that's still the case, but I'd look at some real life comparisons before you shell out your money.

Seems like all of the "desireable" options from uniden are all sold out (at least directly from them)

Waze - it saved me from a few tickets. More than once I have seen cars racing by only to get pulled over by cops that were marked on Waze. When I see a police marker on Waze I slow down by default. Of course not all police vehicles are flagged but enough are to make a difference. Waze + a good radar detector would be the way to go.

Check out Uniden. Lots of great info on RDForum.org.

Can't stress RDForum enough, great site to do research. You'll want to read around about the pros and cons of each model and decide what fits your driving best.

The Uniden R7 is for sure one of the top detectors on the market (and IIRC the R3 uses the same basic hardware just with less features making it an excellent unit at its pricepoint)

The new V1 G2 is another very strong contender and since I have a V1 G1 I've been meaning to pick up a G2 sometime soon.

I use an R7 and Waze. In many instances, the cops are just parked and NOT shooting Radar. Laser Jammer is next on the list. Illegal as hell, just don’t get caught jamming.

Glad I bought the Escort.

Sometimes when I want to eat my food but still be productive I will park in the median and mark myself on Waze so nobody does anything stupid in front of me. Why punish violations when I can prevent them entirely AND eat,” one alleged officer says.

Police Might Not Even Care About Waze Speed Trap Reports

Ive heard plenty of cops say before they don't care about showing up on that or people flashing their lights etc.. the point is to get you to slow down, if it gets you to slow down then fine.

Ive still got the old V1, when the V2 came out they had a lot of issues, was giving them time to resolve it before making a decision. Waze has saved my ass plenty of times, I get slowed down well before the radar detector goes off. The V2 still doesn't use GPS but I see open source apps being made for it

Still no proactive measures out there, right? Last i remember, jammers were illegal, but maybe some sort of scrambler or coating or something.

They lowered the speed limit in my area and installed speed cameras everywhere. You can be on a 2 lane back avenue, and the cameras start tagging you at 35mph.

Speed cameras are the biggest scam. All the money goes to the owner of the cameras. Hint: it's not the local government.

Uniden R7 here (previously had the R3 and escort 9500ix) and really like it.

Arrows aren’t as responsive to changes like the V1 I’ve borrowed in the past. Sometimes they take a while to change from front to back when passing the source or show the side arrows if there’s a bunch of buildings around me and the source is close.

Range is excellent, even with the sensitivity turned down for k-band (couple speed signs in my area).

OLED display makes seeing everything much easier than the V1s could ever do.

The v1 g2 (crazy it’s still a v1 after like two decades) still comes up short IMO in some departments.
