I know I don't post much at all but this one seemed post worthy. Welding up some reinforcement for the pinch weld on my 98 GT I managed to set the interior of the car on fire on the passenger side. Carpet, headliner and rear seat delete is more then likely garbage along with some plastic paneling on the passenger side and the seat belt. The most damage done is from the firs entinguisher. Finished up the final weld and went to sit in the garage for a few mins. Turned around and thought to myself damn my windows look dark and then realize the smoke pushing out.
Good news is I'm going to swap over to a black interior slowly while preparing it for paint work.
Anyone dealt with a fire and what to look for. Battery is disconnected for the time being because I know there is a harness that is melted.

Kitten looks cute/good! Your interior, not so much! Sorry to hear about your mishap. What a shame. Could have been a lot worse.....like if you had gone inside for lunch only to come back and see the entire car engulfed in flames.

Damn man that sucks. God thing you at least had an extinguisher nearby before it was a total loss.

@Mojo88 thanks for attaching the pictures.

Yeah I know it definitely could have been worse. Going to tear back into it this weekend and see what needs to be repaired electrically. I'll update with some more pics of carnage.

I'll say one thing, you're not letting this mishap dampen your spirit. You're all set to motor on and tear back into it this weekend.

I locked the keys in my wife's Trans/Am years ago, a buddy of mine had a slim jim so i borrowed it to unlock the door, started trying to unlock the door and noticed smoke coming from under the dash so the window ended up getting busted out to pop the hood and disconnect the battery and spray the area where the smoke was coming from. long story short, car went to the dealership for a new harness but they wouldn't guarantee everything would work again as it should and insurance totaled it out. Now that I'm older and more experienced (and have another vehicle to drive) i would have tried to fix it.

I think getting burned plastic smell out of car will be tough even with new interior. I would definitely put some serious research into mitigating that before dropping a dime on parts.

Thanks for the support guys. The smell is the one thing I haven't put much thought into it. The day it happened I let it outside with the doors open for a good couple hours and the garage doesn't stink of any of the burnt smell. Wish me luck

I hope as well that the smell won't be an issue for you. It was good advice for you not to buy any replacement parts until you're sure the smell is completely gone.

So both seats are out and the rear seat delete is out. Seat delete is able to be saved. Going to have to strip and recover one side of it but it is not melted. Alot of melted wire appears to be the car audio stuff but more digging is necessary. Carpet is about to be out. Smell is better then the last few days

Edit: just pulled the carpet and NONE of the main harness is cooked and so far it is only car audio.

That sucks man. Great attitude though.

I had a similar mishap years ago after putting a new fuel filter in my torino. It sputtered a little bit in traffic and I could not figure out what was going on. I popped the hood and a huge fireball erupted when I fed it some oxygen. The entire front end was engulfed in seconds.
