Having some work done on my car. Mechanic reports the lower caged pulley bearing is shot, as well as idlers etc. Ordered up some billet idlers. Should we even bother trying to rebuild the lower cage, or just get a metco setup?

WWSVTPD?

  1. Where did you order the idlers?are you talking accessory idlers or just the blower drive idlers?
Edit: Yeah, rebuild the stock lower caged pulley.

i have the same problem on my vert. all the rubber bushings around the tribar area are deteriorating and are now allowing a lot of play.

but from the threads i've read on here though, that looks like a real bitch to try to rebuild yourself.

@hotcobra03 rebuilt his a couple of times but then switched to a metco

If you opt to rebuild

finding something strong enough to fit
Pulley and post.

on mine it was just to far gone.

pulley holes were egged and the post were worn down to tips

the tri bar isn’t really made to come on/off.

it’s left hand thread also.
Clamp tri bar than turn Allen bolt
Try not to use heat.
I had to repair what threads were left with file.

for new post I used wheel studs
And made a threaded post much larger than oem

only worked for a short time till rubber was flattened

metco was like the only option

I went with a 4lb

I got idlers from vmp. Metco idler setup was twice the price, and I already have a snub idler on there. Gonna replace the bearing in it.

Accessory drive will get new oem style idlers.

My tri bar bushings are still there, so no damage to pins.

I'll probably make the final decision based on how the tri bar threads look when it comes apart. Def leaning toward rebuild if looks like it'll hold up when done.

Mechanic said bearing feels gritty when you spin the pulley. He applied heat to the shaft to get it out of the damper, prolly toasted the bearing then.

I know it's staked in, glad to hear it should be a store stock item.

It’s also left hand thread.

I had to do a couple heat cycles With PB blaster, hammer it a couple times with the impact. Repeat.

I was able to just barely grip the tribar in my vice

I told him it was l.h. threads before he started on it.

I might go by there and give it hell myself. If I **** it up it's on me.

You will see in my pics I clamped over it to a piece of frame.

Allen on a breaker bar with a 5ft jack handle over that.

The next time I had a stand up press.

used that 2nd time

what’s even more crazy.
Install hand tight. Start car.

try to remove. Damn this thing gets tight.

I didn't do it, mechanic did. I suggested he try using the press, and he called this morning to report success and whine about bearing being staked.

Kindof at a loss as to how you’d use a press but been awhile since I took one apart.
