Does anyone know where to rent a trailer from that isn't U-Haul, Penske, or Budget?

This may be a hard request to fill, but i'm looking for a car trailer somewhat similar to one you would see at the track. For example, a diamond plated open trailer that is commonly seen. I have a friend that is willing to drive down to Florida with me to pick up a Fox, but I don't want to use a U-Haul, Budget, or Penske car trailer. Those 3 are basically the same trailer. My friend just bought an 86' GT a few months ago and rented a U-Haul trailer and it places a lot of the weight towards the front on the hitch and compresses the rear suspension down.

It created the truck to look like this when hooked up with the car on the trailer.

His truck is only 1 or 2 years old I believe. I've had issues with U-Haul trailers in the past as well when selling a car to a buyer who came and picked it up from my house. The trailer has these two tracks each tire has to follow and at the end is a very sharp and high increase where the bumper is supposed to roll over in order to tie it down, at least for that time. It appears Budget and Penske use the exact same trailer with these tire tracks the car has to follow to fit on the trailer.

It wasn't that big a deal since my buddy picked up this car in VA and he lives in MD, but driving down to FL and picking up a trailer there and towing a car back that distance is something that concerns me.

Are there any open style design trailers to rent?

Thanks!

Most of the things you're worried about are common and fairly normal.

The truck looks fine in the pic above, what's the problem? It shouldn't be swaying or anything loaded like that.

For loading, it's pretty normal to need some wood as extra ramps.

Oh ok, thanks for the insight. I didn't know. My buddy just said he was a bit concerned about it. I've never towed any car and I think that was the first time he ever towed a car on a trailer.

Squat with a trailer is normal for basically all trucks.

My old 200k mile Explorer towing my old Cobra. Explorer had a short add-a-leaf and load helper shocks in the rear to help the worn out leaf springs. Still squatted but thats to be expected with a 1/4 ton truck.

10-15% of the GTW should be on the hitch. If I that makes the truck squat you need a bigger truck or at least an equalizer hitch.

Agree with @kazman. The car should be on the trailer with the weight centered over the trailer axles.

@99MustangGTman I found these guys in a google search for Maryland:

Rentals

They are a uhaul dealer but it looks like they rent non uhaul trailers too. Maybe they could get you pointed in the right direction.

The short answer is no. not many trailer rental places out there. If you have facebook id post in a local mustang group and see if anyone is willing to lend/rent you their trailer. I use to rent out my trailer when i still had one.

Agreed but with the u-haul trailer you're forced to place the front tires up against the front of the trailer so the tire ratchet strap system will work.
I can't seem to edit my prior reply...

I would use my own tie-downs to load the vehicle properly. You don't have to tie it down at the front.
U-Haul trailers are well built, I wouldn't hesitate to rent one. Of course I have a F-250 so the weight is not an issue.

I like the u-haul trailers as well and would love if they sold them to the public.

I'm surprised U-Haul rented to you with that Explorer. Their policy is not to rent to that generation of Explorer.

Also he could have flipped the hitch to raise the nose of the trailer a little. That will push some of the nose weight back as it looks like it’s at a small downward angle, but unless you have air ride with the leveling feature your going to have squat.

What's the cost to rent a u haul trailer? I'm debating on trailering my 90 coupe next spring for a tune. Only about an hour one way.

Sorry not trying to hijack, good thread.

I had to have my friend rent the trailer with his truck and we did the switch-a-roo down the street from u-haul.

I did rent one u-haul trailer with the Explorer though, but it was at a third party place that rents u-haul stuff. I said I had a mercury mountaineer (cause they’ll rent to those still even though it’s the same damn thing) and the kid who hooked up the trailer didn’t even realize.

Could you back the car on to the trailer? I could be wrong but that should center the weight over the trailer wheels better.

About $60, I've rented them enough that I could have just bought a decent 18' hauler by now.
