I'm curious. I've owned my car since 2010 and haven't cracked one. But it seems to be a common thing.

I've thought about buying one and putting it on the shelf.

So who's had a broken one, and who's keeping a spare?

Common problem. Mine is still good, it comes from people closing with their hand on the spoiler. Doh! I think they are pricey too!

I've owned my coupe since 2007. I sold my spoiler and 3rd brake light, but ended up going back to the original Cobra set up a few years ago. I have owned my Vert since 2016.

I have never broke a third brake light. When I bought my replacement for my coupe I got it from one of those places that parts out wrecked Cobra's and it was still a pretty penny.

Based on a comment above about how people push down on the spoiler to close the trunk. I place my thumb in the trunk lock area and place my fingers in the license plate light area. I pull down on my trunk and then use my fingers to ease the trunk down as it closes. This way the trunk dose NOT slam closed AND I do NOT place any pressure on the spoiler/third brake light area.

Has worked so far.....

I've been closing my trunk pretty much the same way.

I’ve dreaded the crack since I bought my Cobra in 16. I close the trunk by placing my hand on the license plate. May have to try the suggestions mentioned above.

Mine was cracked when I bought it. Replaced it with a new stock unit. Then for father's day one year my son got me the carbon driven sequential light. So my good one is in a box on a shelf.

I use the license plate frame to close the trunk lid.

Bought my car in 07', never broke mine, still OEM. I loosened the mounting screws a 1/4 turn so it kinda floats in there. I never push on the spoiler or anything, only use the tail light.

Orange car's is broke on both sides! But my blue car's is still intact.

I can still remember breaking it just a couple years after buying the car new... sort of leaned back against the trunk and heard CRAAACK...

I was like "D'oh!!! Okay, that's fragile."

my 01 (with an OEM 03 spoiler) cracked near the screws, but i'm confident that it's failure was resultant of worn out gas cylinders and a history of the trunk being slammed. the one in my 03 is OEM, and while the cylinders are old and worn i've never let it close hard and it's been holding up great. water intrusion is another story . . .
