My dad always avoided/refused to talk about Vietnam. My cousin on the other hand described it like piling up body parts all day from the ones you knew and loved and the ones you didnt, he had tons of stories gore and all.

*edit*
Stories like these are why I try my best to never complain.

I don't know how those guys did it. I used to work with a guy who was in a unit doing operations where they weren't supposed to be operating. Getting shot at landing, getting shot at taking off, getting shot at on the ground. I watched We Were Soldiers, and I asked him: How did you cope? How the hell did you fly into a wall of fire, how did you get out into a wall of fire, how did you take off through a wall of fire? He said "you just did it. You only thought about it later." And seeing this made me remember the scenes in that movie of them taking fire in the air, of hosing the blood out of the helicopter kinda sorta and then going back for another load. I don't know how any of them, or anybody in any situation like it, before or since, have done it. Hats off.

My dads a 76yo and Vietnam vet. He hardly ever talks about. I’ve only heard maybe 2 stories from him. They definitely don’t build them like they use too. Old mans an ox and you can’t slow him down even at 76 years old! He always compares the heat and humidity to Vietnam and says it’s nothing here.

Bottom line is if u came out of there alive it was pure luck...... Those helicopter pilots were the real heroes of that war imo.

Their job was simply to fly in and save as many lives as they can and then go back and do it again day after day.

Amazing and brave! I woke up this morning thinking how much blood had to have been on those two to take a bath in ****ing jet fuel! Hard to wrap my head around that.

My Father passed away a few years ago and served as a USMC door gunner in Vietnam. Like the rest of your guys stories; he also never spoke about it. The most my brother and I ever got from him was that he was blown away to have to pick his friends up in pieces. R.I.P. Dad. I was always very proud of him for that.

I've come to the conclusion over my decades on this planet that there's generally an inverse relationship between how much military guys talk about the shit they experienced, and how much shit they actually experienced. If they don't talk about it, you probably don't want to know much about it, if you don't want to share the nightmares.

That was definitely an intense video. I served during the Vietnam War in the Tonkin Gulf on an aircraft carrier. I didn't experience the blood, gore and anxiety of ground operations, but I did hear so many stories similar to the video. I lost friends there, and have friends today who served there. Small wonder that so many of our Vietnam era vets have mental issues. How the hell can you even begin to forget the horrors you had to live through. I salute every one of our Vietnam vets. Thanks for posting the video.

I just cannot imagine. Huge amount of respect for this guy. Stories like this is why it infuriates me when people disrespect the military. I never served, so i don’t comprehend how anyone who hasn’t could not appreciate what they do or have done.

Edit: pretty sure i pulled off a triple negative in that last sentence
