Anyone tried one of these? Some newer cars now feature wireless CarPlay. I am thinking of getting something like this for the Cobra so I can enjoy CarPlay without having to plug the phone into a USB port. I will also be looking for a NFC charging adapter that can integrate nicely with the dashboard. That way I can just sit the phone down, have it charge and also control CarPlay on the head unit.

Is that just for music?

I've been using Bluetooth for years.

Sent from my SM-G986U using the svtperformance.com mobile app
Text, calls, music, siri, Apple dashboard, maps, various apps, etc.

I don't know why apple didn't have it wireless before, I read at one point that it wasn't secure so they required it to be plugged in.

Ahhh. Yeh I just use Bluetooth for all that. Anything on my device comes through the speakers in my jeep. Google maps, speech to text, music, calls.

You can't mirror your phone's screen just with Bluetooth alone. Audio will play. Sure. But I want to see Waze on the car's head unit touchscreen and not look down on my iPhone screen to follow the map. With standard CarPlay you have to use a USB cable to mirror the phone's screen on the touchscreen. But with wireless CarPlay you don't even need the cable. Only issue is the phone would not be charging. Hence why I would then be interested in a NFC kit where you just drop the phone on it to charge while using wireless CarPlay.

It's not just about sound.

I drove down to Florida twice the past 3 years and Waze saved me quite a few times from getting a speeding ticket. It is also safer to follow Waze on the head unit display vs looking down at your phone screen.

wireless carplay is amazing! but it is also useless at times, due to electrical interference you will find in some areas, I have a Pioneer 4500nex in my beater Honda Accord, and I get drops and disconnects in the same areas without fail, as said, sometimes it is useless, the system I have my Audi S5 has wireless carplay as well, and it drops in the very same areas as the Pioneer, something to be mindful of...

That's interesting to know. Thanks I'll have to read up on it.

Here's a review by someone of the adapter I posted.

I always found it was just simpler to plug the phone in. It's annoying but man, at least it keeps it charged and is consistent operations wise.

Kinda defeats the whole "Wireless" thing. Might as well just plug it unto the USB port. Plus it keeps it charged all the time.

Its not just Bluetooth. Its a complicated Wi-Fi that makes it work. Bluetooth been around since 1994.

The newer head units are just offering wireless CarPlay. IOS9 was the first phone to support this option and now car stereo companies have been releasing options to work with it.

Bluetooth is old hat.

This! I can only see it a benefit if the USB port was being used with another phone. To me, it's just as easy to just plug it in. I use the USB plug all the time. More secure, too, right?

Funny thing is Bob as soon as I bought a head unit with Apple CarPlay I noticed that I never had to plug my phone in when I got home. It was always charged 100% lol.

I can remember complaining to my GF about having to plug it in to work and she said "At least its always charged" and she was right. Especially since I still have the 5s and the battery sux now lol.

But I guess if u had a charger where u could just lay it on (Some cars offer that wireless charging) then it would be kool but again u accomplish the same thing tho. I guess u save the unbearable sequence of having to "Plug it in" lol.

I am aware. I was referring to whomever was saying they just use BT.
I own a Kenwood DMX9707. My car has wireless carplay for both Android and iPhone. To set it up, you DO need to initially plug it in, but thats only when you first set it up.
I use Android for the Carplay, and use an old iPhone 6s I bought specifically to use as an iPod in the car. My issue however, is that the radio does not charge the iPhone when the car is not running, so the iPod is always dead when I get in the car.
The radio has 2 USB and neither one charge the iPod with the radio off.

Not really. With a NFC charger you just drop the phone down on the phone holder. No need to mess with plugging a USB cable into the phone or angle it down into a USB port. The phone gets charged by the NFC holder and CarPlay works via WIFI. You get in the car, sit the phone down and start driving.

I have a KUDA mount in the Cobra. Years ago I drilled 4 little AMPS compatible holes in the mount and attached a FIX2CAR holder / charger for my iPhone 4S. So I can remove that holder and replace it with a wireless NFC capable holder. But I would also have to add the wireless adapter to the head unit.

Holders And Mounts > Adjustable universal dash mounts > Fix2Car wireless charging car holder and dash mount

I just bought a 2021 Kia Soul Turbo 2 days ago. It comes loaded with most options (heated seats, heated steering wheel, heads up display, lane assist driving, adaptive cruise control, 10.5" LED screen, upgraded sound system etc. etc. AND wireless charging built in. You just drop the phone down on the shelf below the head unit and it charges the phone. A led on the dash shows if it is charging or not. Car comes with 201 HP at 3000 lbs. 0-60 MPH in around 6 seconds. Not bad for the price. I got a $3563 rebate and they are covering the disposition fee for the lease that I am getting out of.
