I am thinking of a Tacoma TRD or Colorado Duramax ZR2. Anyone have any experience? I have plenty of experience with Toyota and thinking of mixing it up. If Chevy is the Duramax worth it?

We service a canyon with the 4 banger Duramax. Seems pretty decent from my experience, nothing besides oil changes, and check ups. But he’s also very gentle on it, so take it for what it’s worth.

Pick your poison.

ZR2 with the v6 IMO. That baby duramax is a great mill, but waaaaay down on horsepower.

The ZR2 has suspension built for higher speed off roading and trails. The diesel is a mismatch to the rest of the truck IMO.

I think the Toyota looks like ass personally.. and its overpriced.

Money no option, ZR2 Colorado.

But for poor guys like me, ive got my eye on a Pro-4x Frontier. 0%/72 months plus hefty dealer discounts has my attention peaked.

What was turnoff? Quality and reliability are off the hook but they are underpowered and slow. Anything else?
Check engine light. I asked to run diagnostic at 10k miles after 5 months of ownership. They said it would cost $200.
Both sides rubber roof rain grommets would come out on windy days to and pound the roof. Bang bang over and over. I asked them to fix and they put them back only to have them come out on the highway over and over.
Stereo was awful.
Xm Sirius worst reception I ever had in a vehicle. Asked them to fix that too. No dice.
When it rained it sound as if it was tin roof with no ceiling insulation.
Auto tranny was poor too. Never stayed in the gear I wanted even in manual mode. Not impressed.

I forgot my other "money no option" choice.

Gladiator Mojave! Bad ass rig. Advanced suspension similar to ZR2 and Raptor. (as in, built for high speed desert running) Dana 44 axles front and back bone stock.

Im not 100% on the way the Gladiator looks, but that Mojave package is sweet.

Also I guess they have problems in the cold which will be a no go for mw since it is cold as balls where I am at 6 months out of the year.

That's a good point. But that rings true for any diesel i suppose.

It is. But it’s as much as my Tremor. Gen 1 Raptor?

I have no comment on the ZR2 they do look sweet. A friend of mine had a Taco and didn’t keep it long. Cam girdle or something like that leak at 500 miles had to pull the motor. Alignment was never right after the steering wheel was off. Transmission always was hunting for gear. They wouldn’t do the tsb couldn’t verify they said. He traded it on a Ram and couldn’t of been happier.

I don't agree with the mainstream toyota= quality stuff. I believe Toyota just has a classic cult following and engines that last due to being an anemic ancient turd. I was looking into trucks not too long ago, comparing the Toyota and the Canyon/Colorado and almost every single 2-3 year old Taco had faded headlights with moisture in the lens and fading paint amongst still battling rusty frames.

The Chevys seemed to be holding up much better aesthetically. Although the diesel NEEDS to be deleted/tuned and I couldnt find much of an aftermarket for that.

End of the day I would have chosen the V6 ZR2 but ended up with something totally different for towing purposes

My cousin had two new trd tacos. First one was lemon lawed. He bought another one and said the transmission sucked and he would take it in and they said theres nothing wrong with it so he got rid of it.

Father-in-law (84) has the diesel canyon. Has 32k and it feels and sounds like the front end is gonna fall off. I have yet to take it in to get it fixed, but probably will in a couple weeks when I get home. To me the interior is small and cramped, but I’m 6’2.

It’s decent but I would personally never buy one. My .02 cents

I have a 2016. Coloradofans forum has a dedicated area for them.

The issues that I have had have been related to it being a first year model. I would get a newer one without hesitation.

The one issue I know about for cold weather places is sometimes condensation freezes and can dislodge and go into the turbo and bend a fin.
