A fallen telephone line running from pole to pole, can it be cut w/o getting electrocuted?

If anyone knows it has to be someone on here, right?

IIRC they are low amp and like 40V BUT are in the 100V range when ringing.

I only have a vague recollection of high school physics. But, I believe I remember that you have to have a "difference of potential" to get shocked... So, if you don't touch two lines at once and you're grounded, I think you'll be fine!! Go give it a try and report back!

AND there is no path from you to the ground (earth ground not electrical term) so one line and you're not grounded. Not to mention cutting the wire will most certainly cause the wires inside to all short together over the snips.

99% sure you're fine, but if its from the pole that utility property. Just call them its their problem.

Thanks for the correction- I was wrong about being grounded! Sorry OP, my original advice may have not been very wise... hahaha! Black02GT is definitely correct- call the phone company :)

Utility companies always tell customers to not touch downed lines. For a reason. Phone lines are a lesser risk, but personally, I wouldn't care. I would steer clear of both. Let the utility companies deal with the lines.

All jokes aside, call telephone company and mention its a "safety" issue. Seems to get everyone's attention.

I cut a phone line before after reporting it 3 times over two weeks to Verizon.

Sure enough the minute I cut it they were there that afternoon fixing it.

High Voltage is always at the top of the pole for a reason.
And don’t lick it, expose the wires and touch it to your tongue.

I'm surprised land lines are still a thing

Throw some oven mitts on, a pair of rubber rain boots, and cut the ****er with a pair of hedge trimmers

Posts and likes are not mine.

old people and people in BFE with no cell service like our place in NC. My mom was going over to the house to let the plumber into the garage and kept asking me for the phone password to my alarm in case she screwed up disarming it and was getting upset about it. I finally asker her WTF good it would do her when they're gonna call my cell phone? Then she remembered I don't have a land line o_O
