What is this device under the dash?

My friend just bought a 2016-ish Toyota Highlander and this aftermarket-looking thing is screwed to the under dash panel. It has one white wire coming out of it. Prior owner doesn’t know, and I have no clue. Any ideas?

Flux Capacitor?

Unscrew from dash check for part number enter part number in Google. It has a button on it. Sort of looks like a light.

Might be some type of tracking device in case a dealership has to reposess it. Like they use at those buy here pay here lots for those with questionable/no credit?!?

Cut the wire and see what happens!

not always.. I’ve bought from buy here pay here places in the past.. they are blatant with “ yeah we are watching you with this shit “

Follow the wire, whats it tied into and does it do anything like light up??? Also agree with pulling it off and googling the P/N.

Some kind of sensor for an aftermarket alarm is my guess. Glass breakage sensor maybe?

My wife bought a Tacoma before we met. The dealer installed an alarm/PATS device and they put the reader under the steering wheel in a similar location. That's my best guess anyway.
