I'm not a fan of Mercruiser. I have a pair of 6.2 MPIs and everything Mercruiser added to the base SBC is a pain to work on and mostly stupidly engineered. The best inboard gas engines going now are Ilmor. For older stuff, give me Crusaders any day.

My 2005 Mercruiser has been nothing but great. I do all my own maintenance and find it easy. The hardest thing is the raw water pump impeller. About a 4 hour job start to finish taking my sweet time.

The crank driven pump on volvos make the impeller change a 15 minute job. Wait until you get to rebuild that POS Mercruiser raw water pump.

I have. That's exactly what I said takes me 4 hours taking my sweet time. Only hard thing to do on my boat.

You did the bearings and seals? It's amazing what a POS that thing is. I get it, they want to sell you a $600 pump when A $4 seal fails. I used this rebuild kit:

I have not changed the bearings or seals. Haven't needed to yet. Since I remove the whole pump to redo the impeller I don't see it being much more difficult to press that out and press in new bearings.

My boat has been the cheapest vehicle I've owned since we bought it. And until this year has been dead reliable. I think it just has a corroded connection somewhere, but I'm too fat and lazy to go looking for it. So I'll be taking it to a mechanic to have it fixed.

It's a 2005 21.5' Sea Ray 200 Sport. Has the Mercruiser (Chevy) 5.0 in it. Tops out about 45mph. Has enough power to throw my kids around on tubes and a tank of gas usually lasts all day. We bought it used back in 2012 with 50 hours on it. I think we're up to 135 now. We don't get to take out as much as we like, but it's still fun to have.
Felt like I should follow up after the mechanic visit. Naturally it worked great. He had it about 3 hours and everytime he turned the key it fired right up. Hopefully I'll be able to get it in the water before the temps drop.

honestly a jet drive is the best way to go to avoid the stern drive bullshit. A jet will suck more gas but is WAY cheaper on repairs. If a merc or volvo goes out, that's $3000-4000. Outboards are even worse.
