*Update*

So I had the car on the lift and really tried to source this out. It sounds like its coming from #8 Cylinder like the TSB said :(
I let the car sit on my lift for 40 mins with pretty much zero noise, I was just lightly blipping the motor to hear for any noise and nothing. Once I was really revving the motor up the noise came out of no where like a light switch as if the higher RPM triggered it but it would go away when I would rev the motor around 1500 RPMS if that makes sense to you guys.

Being I was by myself I couldn't rev it and be under the car at the same time so I put the AC on full blast to put more of a load on the motor and the noise came back consistently "click click" pause click click click pause etc. I used my stethoscope on the valve cover bolt of cylinder #8 and I can hear the noise. I believe it sounds like more of tin sound vs the rest of the cylinders but very hard to tell it almost sounds identical to the others, you can also hear it clearer if you put the stethoscope on the Driver side Exhaust / CAT and of course you can hear it from Driver side wheel well like the TSB states. I've noticed the hotter the car runs the more the noise happens. What puzzles me is how all the sudden I got the noise after 23k id be more understanding if it happened a lot earlier on these cars but who knows I gues this can come at any time?? Anyway here's a video underneath the car, sorry if I was moving around a good bunch it was hot as hell under there haha

Do you happen to be still in the 5yr powertrain warranty?

I don’t think so. If I did I bet ford would just tell me it’s normal and send me on my way. I’m guessing it’s the lifters that have to be replaced?

When was the original purchase date?

Also if not under warranty definitely needs borascope. Maybe compression check too. Any well known quality shops in the area?

Yeah there’s one, just off of reviews they seem to be a good shop. I’m actually going to be giving them a call tomorrow to get their perspective. I’m not apposed to bringing it in but I can do a compression check, a camera I don’t have but I can get one. If the car is running strong would those steps be needed? Just asking.

Everything I read keeps leading me to believe it’s the lifters not bleeding down correctly. I also assume this issue can arise at any time but I’m not sure. When Ford said this was a normal operation I’m wondering why they would say so if it didn’t do it before and now all the sudden just happen how is that normal. If the lifters needed to be changed I might let the shop do that.

Well if you can do the compression check i say do it. Same time it gives you a look at all the spark plugs, plugs can tell you alot.

Personally that knocking noise does not sound normal. Whats interesting is that is sounds louder on the bottom than it does on the top.

Hard for me to tell exactly where the sound is coming from, not that I would know anything anyway :) . But you indicated you can do a compression test. I would do that. It's too bad anyone who seems to have problems doesn't live any where near me or I would help. Hope it all turns out well.

Yeah I'll get the tool and do it. its all weird, the car runs strong and I had the car sitting for 30 minutes just lightly blipping the throttle and nothing it was once I started really revving the motor it came. you'd think it would do it non stop not when warm. I guess ill see what I find. Are there any recommendations on how many PSI it should be? Also what should the plug look like?

Yeah I understand totally. Yeah ill go get the tool and do it, also check the plug, not to sure what to look for.

Hey guys

So I pulled out plugs 7-8 and they looked good I think. I also did a compression test on #7 and #8 cylinder. #7 was 150 and 8 was 148, dry on a cold engine. I also did a scope of the cylinders and they look good besides carbon build up. No scoring of the walls etc.

Good news the plugs look good, other good news is the walls look good. As stated above i would take the mid pipe off and inspect it.

yeah but aren't the cats further up to check that?

Yeah everything looks good so far. Like I mentioned before would I be able to check the cats with just taking off the H pipe? or I have to use a camera? Also if the cats seem ok, id assume everything is ok? I just find it hard to believe, It must be the lifters then no? Im assuming this is why Ford deemed this ok? Id really like to find out why all the sudden this is happening.

The top of the cats, closest to the manifold should be easily visible they are very close to the manifold so they light off quickly for emissions , you could use a mechanics camera to see the bottom of the cats just will need a good bit of extension. Don't be afraid to shake the headpipe around a little and listen for rattles sure sign that one of the cats may have some broken pieces moving around in there. Good luck ......I hope you find that is the problem, hell of a lot cheaper and easier to fix.....

In the very beginning I shook the Cats and hit it with a Mallet and I didn't hear anything. its funny though when the noise is happening I can hear it resonate from the exhaust tip. When the clapping/Ticking is happening I can hear it from the Driver side valve cover, I don't know what what the deal is.

I would take the diagnostic step of installing some 1 7/8” Longtubes and 3” x-pipe to see if it resolves. Worst case the intermittent tick remains but you’ve got 50 - 70 extra horsepower!!

Put the stock mufflers back on and do the OFR X-pipe on. See if it improves at all.

Just my 2 cents here. I had a 89 5.0 LX with 2.02 Aluminum Heads, Holley intake, 320 degree cam ,etc. That Mustang made the same type of sound and came from the #8 cylinder around 5k miles after I made those engine modifications. I know the 5.0 and 5.8 Trinity motors are 2 different animals, but an internal combustion Engine is an Engine. Long story short: I tore the engine apart, cause the sound was driving me crazy too. What I found was when I installed the Aluminum heads, I didn't torque down that particular ARP head bolt as tight as it should have been. Small amounts of coolant would leak by head gasket, into the oil. The oil would foam and the lifters only in that #8 Cylinder would make that noise. I know, you would think all the lifters would rattle? but it was only the lifters on #8. And just like your engine,it would come and go.I Put engine back together(properly with new gaskets, lifters) and Bingo. The sound went away. If I were you I'd look at the oil & see if there's any amount of foaming or discoloration or signs of antifreeze/water in oil. That could be your culprit. Hope you find your problem. Good luck
