Now that I have a mid-pipe with cats, and a new tune, I thought I was ready for NY emissions, but wait....nobody will inspect me with tinted windows. I have to remove them.

What’s the best way? I don’t want to destroy the defroster lines. I was checking out YouTube and saw some vids of people using a steamer. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Thanks,
Henry

Why'd you get a new tune and cats? I pass every year in NY with 1 7/8" long tubes, no cats, cammed and a 03 Cobra engine in a V6... Don't even "know a guy" I just go to a Midus, long as the tune has them disabled properly should be fine. My guess is they're not disabling the monitors just changing the thresholds such that it doesn't trigger. Not sure, I didn't tune this one myself, cams and really high compression, too tricky and expensive of an experiment at my skill level.

...Still will fail for tint though, go figure. Guess it's too obvious.

I’ve always ran an emissions legal tune so that wasn’t my real problem, it was the tints. Most of the shops don’t do a visual. As long as your check engine light is off, they’ll pass you.

It’s the damn tints!!!! That’s been the nightmare

10/4 such a joke. Never tinted my car but the lil lady is having a nightmare getting her STi passed. They just look at it and tell you to **** off. No cats built engine n.p. tint on the other hand... Blows my mind. Cause a Cobra with tinted fronts is more of a risk to cops than a SUV with blacked out rears and unknown amount of people in the back. If you're telling me it's for driver visibility then sun glasses should be illegal. Just one of those rules that defy logical.

I would’ve peeled the front windows, smogged it, then drove straight back to the tint shop after passing.

Steamer is the best method. I've tried it all. I remove tint on my vehicles windshields yearly for inspection stickers. After inspection, windshield gets tinted again.

ironically Jersey doesn't even care about window tint for inspection but it's actually illegal to have
