Hey guys,

So recently ive noticed a tapping rotational sound coming from under my car. It sees to be the worse when the car is warmed up and driven. This doesn't happen on a cold start and sometimes even when warmed nothing happens or I just cant hear it because its so faint. Last night it was pretty loud when I pulled in the garage so I recorded it. I popped the hood just to check and the noise isn't up top at all I just hear the normal injectors sound, only under the car is where the noise is. As you can hear though it goes with the RPMs I'm really not sure what's going on here. The hardest part this is it don't happen all the time. I'm afraid something is in the works and boom lol

FYI the car shifts fine/ Clutch seems fine / Car drive normal.

Here's a video let me know what you guys think. This is by the driver side CAT. Any help or guidance would be cool

Thats not good, ever run it low on oil? Over rev?

Nope, 6300 ish RPMs once and awhile, oil levels look fine in the motor. Like I said this sound comes and goes its stupid. I let the car sit for 30 mins came back and started it up and the noise was gone. but something is hitting something with whatever conditions make it happen. im really puzzled.

It's not the most abnormal thing for the 5.4/5.8s to have a slight tick at idle, especially once it's up to operating temperature. My last 14 GT500 did it all the time, some do it, some don't. What oil and filter do you run?

Yeah this noise started a couple weeks ago, when I pull into my garage i can hear it bounce off the walls. The Ford racing one. only thing I remember is running little hard and I swear if it was after that.

I put the car on the lift and its coming from the bell housing it sounds right after the motor in the bell housing section.

I know it sounds kinda crazy, but try running a OEM FL-820 filter and Motorcraft 5-50 and see the noise goes away or isn't as audible.

if it were mine...I would pull a compression check, drain the oil in a clean pan, open up old oil filter and inspect the oil / filter for any metal particles. Small magnet will pick up any pieces. If there is no evidence of damage...would keep driving but pay attention. Could be a rod bearing or another lower end component?

yeah I was debating on doing a change just to see what happens. The weird part is the noise is coming from the bell Housing which is puzzling ya know.

Yeah I'm going to change the oil out see if I see anything in there, like I mentioned before the noise is coming from the bell housing , I'm just confused what in the clutch area would make that noise.

From everything I've read that noise is oil pressure related, it sounds like it's coming from the bell housing because it's coming from the back of cylinder head. There was a older Ford T-SB talking about running different oil filters or different oil viscosity could possibly result in excessive cylinder head noise. Not saying that it causes any damage, but it can affect oil pressure to the lash adjusters.

I can't get a good mental imagine of what we are looking at, but it looks like the catalytic convertor to me. Is it possible the rattling noise is a broken catalytic convertor rattling in the exhaust. Just a thought.

Yeah I didn't have the car on the lift but that was the driver side CAT When I took that recording. Cats seems fine aswell, I was hoping that was it.
