Correct it’s a VMP Gen 2 (non-R). I ended up buying SCGallo2’s Gen 2 whipple 2.9 and it’s currently en-route. Thank you Gallo for all the photos/details/information on install, fair price, and quick shipping.

This will be my first twin screw but I’m excited to experience the different power band, for better or worse. The Gen 2 was definitely quick but kinda felt like it was running out of steam up top. Not an issue for the 2.65L’s I hear. Sounds like a challenging install compared to VMP but if I’m gonna try a twin screw might as well be now.

Thanks for all the comments everyone - very glad it’s “just” a blower here too!

Anyone know any top notch Shelby tuners in Houston? I’ve been using VMP and had good experience but now that I’ll be outside their TVS wheelhouse I’m thinking it’s time to do a proper dyno tune. Gallo mentioned the Gen 2 2.9 has some cold start drivability issues that a local tuner will have to tune out (Lund wasn’t able to). I’ve had some clutch work done at kinetik and had great experience, just not sure if tuning is their forte or not. May very well be. I’m on the east side of town. Also curious if I’ll absolutely need a wide band for a good tune or not.

Granted with money being tight, I had just bought the VMP custom tune and just about had it dialed in option before all this happened. Has anyone had them tune a twin screw? Seems like an obviously bad idea but just putting it out there.

Pleasure doing business with you Sir. Just a little clarification... I have never had any issues with the blower. My early driveability issues were self-inflicted by asking Lund to tune my combination with the Ford Racing/PHP fuel pump assembly with Walbro GSS342 pumps (not recommended in a returnless system) and ID1000s. He said we could try and fueling appeared good on the datalogs so we went with it. My main issue was cold start fueling in open loop operation, my car stumbled during pedal transitions; once at full operating temp and in closed loop fueling the car drove great under normal conditions and ran strong. Lund didn't see this as a big issue and wasn't interested in trying to resolve it. A second issue was transitions from 1st gear on boost to off boost and then back on the gas, my car would stumble when fuel pressure fluctuated, again which I can relate to the fuel pumps not liking to be switched on and off. I never brought this issue to Lund's attention because it happened so infrequently, but it bothered me.

When I decided to switch Tuners, I contacted JDM and we discussed my setup and driveability issues. They wanted me to return the fuel pump assembly back to stock before they tuned it, which I did. I planned on taking the car to them for a dyno and drive tune. In the meantime, they sent me a basic startup and drive tune so I could drive the car and it ran pretty good. I still had a little cold start open loop fueling stumble during pedal transitions, but it was better. When I dropped the car off with them, I asked them to work on cold start fueling and they did to the point where I am content. Now I have great performance and great driveability which is important to me.

The disadvantage that earlier cars have is that we don't have widebands working with the PCM to constantly regulate air/fuel ratio under all conditions, and the data they provide in a datalog. I have heard VMP say that they won't "remote tune" a car without wideband data, and I believe that Lund Racing requires the same, hence the ZT-2 datalogging package that works with NGauge.

I recommend installing a wideband sensor and gauge so that you can monitor A/F ratio, and I recommend a dyno tune with a reputable GT500 Tuner to get the best results with driveability and power.

on the tuning... stick with Justin if you've been happy, I'm comfortable saying he will be able to tune the Whipple just as well.

Correct. Justin can tune a Whipple just fine.
In general the best way is to find a tuner you’re comfortable with and stay with them with open communication.
Good luck.

I haven't been happy with Lund. This thread isn't about my problems so I won't go into details. I'm going to buy HP Tuners hardware/software and find someone who will coach me a bit and tune the car myself. I'm done with the man behind the curtain BS.

I can’t for the life of me remember why but I didn’t have a great experience with Lund either a couple years ago, so I went to VMP when I bought my Gen 2; no complaints at all for 2 years and probably 10 tunes. So many owners use Lund successfully though.

Of all the cars I’ve owned I’ve never done a proper dyno tune, or even put one on the dyno, so I’m taking this opportunity to give it a shot for better or worse.

Kinetik Motorsport in Houston did my clutch a couple months ago and were great to deal with, so I’m dropping it off today for the tune (HP Tuners). They’ve done some pretty crazy builds so I think I’ll be pleased.
