Qualified Immunity is necessary to allow police officers to do their job without second guessing themselves or hesitating. In a lot of situations, officers have to make split second decisions based on knowledge at the time and their perception of the situation. Hesitation could get officers killed.

Qualified Immunity does not allow officers to act indiscriminately and is not a guarantee.

If an officers actions are determined to be wrong after the fact, but based on the situation, perception of the officer, and the action was taken in good faith, the officer can be absolved of wrong doing.

I completely agree with holding officers accountable for their actions, but there needs to be a fair measure which qualified immunity provides. Without it, I don't think you'll have many people staying in law enforcement. At the very least, they are likely to be lackadaisical with their duties. Why would they put themselves at risk?
