Just wondering if I'm the only one who uses a fuel additive with every fill-up? On my 2009 6.4L Powerstroke F-350 every full tank of fuel it has received has included 4 ounces Ford's Cetane Booster & Performance Improver.

I'm sure there are better choices out there, and I'm willing to give them a shot. However, I always operated under the theory that anything that adds lubricity to the fuel is better than nothing. Anyone else using anything different?

I've been putting 1 oz of hot shots secret everyday treatment in with each fill up since I got my 6.7. With my past 7.3 trucks I added 2-4oz of tcw3 with each fillup.

I run a fleet maintenance shop with two 20,000 gallon in-ground diesel tanks. We put 5 gallons of cetane booster in with each 7,500 gallon fuel delivery. If the company I work for believes in it, maybe there's something to it.

Yes. Every drop in my 06 and my 17. I currently use Opti-Lube and have been pleased with it.

Might have to try again. I forget what in tried, but a few guys on the diesel board I'm on swore by it. I ran it through three tanks and didn't notice any difference so I didn't buy another bottle.

A couple times in my 6.0 back when they went to the low sulfur fuel. But haven't in a long time. 273k on it now. Did all the injectors at 250k. I use the hot shot secret 32oz in the oil now every change.

I'm pretty sure we put something like this in one of our tractors and it blew up the motor

On my third truck now and have never put anything in the fuel. We did however try some fuel treatment in a motorhome over a long trip. Never saw any fuel millage change and obviously could not tell of any long term effects.

Here in Ca we have a bio fuel they call HPR and it’s supposed to have a higher cetane content than #2 and better lubricity. My 6.0 likes it, my old 7-3 loved it. It idles quieter, gets to speed a little easier then also it doesn’t smoke much if at all. On my 7-3 with a hot tune it would barely puff out some smoke then clear up at full boost. Weird part was the smoke was brownish. My 6.0 isn’t bullet proofed yet so no tune or extra boost yet.

If I’m making an order with amsoil I’ll get a couple bottles. I’ll add it every six months or so

I always add either Hot Shot’s or Power Service, whichever I happen to have bought on sale. Never had a problem with either, and with the added cetane I do notice easier starting in the winter times, nothing noted in the summer months. I do it mainly for what Sid mentioned, the added lubricious that our pumps/injectors need that is sorely lacking with lsd.

Can also add some two stroke (low ash or ash less) oil in with a fill up at ~200:1 from what I’ve always read. Never had any problems with it either, and my Cummins is quieter with it. I wouldn’t recommend it with a DPF, not even sure about with a Cat though I’ve never seen clear evidence of it causing problems with them. I don’t have either so I’m gtg.

Your mom
Anything you get from the major refiners will meet or exceed the ASTM D 975 requirements. They will inject additives at the distribution centers when loading to meet lubricity since they can't blend it at the refinery due to preventing it contaminating jet fuel. They will all meet minimum, as-advertised, cetane.

Biodiesels on the other hand.....I wouldn't recommend them unless they use at least a 2% soy feed stock. The products made from recycled fats and grease typically have poor lubricity unless an additive is used and I wouldn't trust many of these little mom and pop places selling their "bio-willie" stuff to actually use the correct additives if at all.

And yes, CA actually has the best diesel. Their regulations are much stricter as are the documentation requirements.
