Possibly relocating for my job from East TN to Melbourne FL. Was just curious if anyone had any insight on the area? Will be an adjustment coming from some terrain to really none. Also the loss of a real winter season. Houses in the 400k-500k range (with an acre or two) look doable and most have pools which will help with the heat in the summer. How about the wildlife? Are gators all over the place? We have dogs and would really not like to have them eaten for dinner. Any good drag strips In the area? What about OHV areas? Thanks to anyone who can provide any insight!

I don't live anywhere near Melbourne.

However, general rule of thumb there's always a gator in a pond. It's not like Jurassic Park down here but, safety first.

If there’s water assume there’s a gator and /or cotton mouth

drag strip - orlando speed world is probably your best bet (take 95 north to hwy 50).

not sure about ohv areas that way

Yeah many of the Houses I’ve been looking at have little ponds on the property. I’d probably look to fill those in, if allowed by law. Pretty much anytime I see freshwater I’m assuming a gator is near. I could be completely off base. Thanks for the input man!

Crooms in Brooksville if you're riding atvs. No side x sides allowed there. Hogwaller if your into mud. Ocala national forest for some trail riding.

The ponds are probaly there to help drain off water cause its probaly very wet in the rainy season.

Thanks for the reply. Well gators and cottonmouths, what’s not to love. I appreciate the heads up.

Yeah I have dirt bike so really into trail riding. Might be interested in a SBS eventually.

I didn’t think about the ponds being there for drainage. Might not be something a man could get rid of.

Why do I feel like it’s the Amazon down there? Lol.

if its just the drainage for the property you can control that with the gator thing if theres not a bunch of other bodies of water real close by. It's not a huge a issue but definitely something to keep in mind.

Croom is a big off road park but it would be a little bit of a drive from out there, although you can camp out and such. If you can find someone with a key to Suburban estates down around Kissimmee thats a good place to go ride as well.

I'm 50 or so miles south of Melbourne. Like that area.
House prices are fair for the house/land. It's not too far from major hubs but not too close either.

You'll be 100 or so miles from Ocala national Forest which has miles and miles of ohv trails and camping grounds

About 130 miles nw of Melbourne is Ocala national Forest which has miles and miles of dedicated ohv trails. I like Melbourne and am probably 50-60 miles south of it. New developments popping up around there

Down town Melbourne is great. I kept a boat there for several months. It's the first place I've been in FL that I really liked. I'll def be back there sometime in the future. It's about an hour drive to OSW. You'll be close to a ton of performance shops.

I'm down in the Treasure Coast area, a little more than an hour south of Melbourne, which is a nice small city. I really like Melbourne- very nice place. It's not a city in the truest sense of the word, but it's not Smallville either. Downtown is super nice, great beaches, lots of much smaller towns surrounding the area. Cape Canaveral is around the corner so you get a front row seat to every rocket launch- very cool.

Don't worry about snakes/gators. I've been here 40 years, always lived on/near water- lakes, canals- never actually seen a cottonmouth or gator in any of them although I know they are there.

Weather is generally nice too- warm weather six months a year, cooler temps/lower humidity the rest, very nice balance. CentFla seems to get hit more frequently w/tornadoes than the rest of the state, usually in winter/spring- Jan-May.

Orlando area is a mere 1.5 hrs away max, West Palm Beach is probably 1.5 hrs south. Moroso race track is located in WPB, Daytona is the next county north and there are some smaller tracks up in that area, I believe Deland.

Bottom line- you could definitely pick worse areas of FL to live in. I would have no issues moving there from my area. Good luck.

Wow so many replies to hit them all individually. Thanks so much to everyone for their insights. We definitely have some decisions to make but it sounds like if you’re gonna move to FL and you’re not super rich, MLB is the place to be. I’m a meteorologist and I know the east coast of the peninsula is much more exposed to ATL TCs as opposed to the Big Bend area and GOM TCs (or ATL TCs for that matter). I think for me the toughest part is going to be the loss of the winter season and snow, but I guess we can always vacation in CO.

I’ve live there for the past 3 years and love it. Three great tracks near by OSW, Palm beach, Brandenton. OSW is about 45min away the other two are 2-3 hours away.

That price range checkout houses on Tropical trail in Melbourne, Titusville, Palm Bay has some nice areas and Viera but you will pay a premium to live there but it has some nice shopping places.

We have this place called the compound in Palm Bay it was going to be a neighborhood but they stopped building it so now it’s just open. Cops were starting to crack down on people there since so many where getting hurt and needed medivacd out.

You got any other questions let me know.

You'll love it. Just don't do anything stupid like swim in a pond and you'll be fine when it comes to gators. Get a generator and have a switch installed by the main panel but you may end up never using it. Keep some supplies in the garage.

If you get a house with a pool, get a fence around it since you have dogs. No matter how familiar dogs are with a pool, if they fall in and panic, they will forget how to get out and drown. A mesh fence around the pool is about a grand and will save you from that heartache. Keeps the gators out too ;)

I know several people in Melbourne (I'm about 1.5 hours away) and they really enjoy it. They moved there from other parts of FL.

If you don't own a gun, buy one...Fl requires it to live here ;)

The only Gators I ever worried about were those from Gainesville ;)

Seriously though, I lived all over Florida since 1978, From Jax to Miami to St. Pete, family in Orlando, Cocoa Beach, and Ocala, NEVER had one problem with a Gator. Other than one grabbing my bait while fishing once...It broke my line never to be seen again.

You will love you Job in FL. Very dynamic place to work in your specialty.

If I were to retire in FL, the "space coast" would be a great choice if I wanted to be near the ocean.

Wow thanks again for the further replies. Such great info from everyone! Sounds like if you're gonna move to FL, this is a great place to be. Looking at real-estate a little deeper, would be nice to find a place with a few acres, not a subdivision person unless the lots are 1 acre +. Seems there aren't a ton of those, but some exist. We also prefer new construction, which may hinder that "land" search a little. As for guns, I'm a former grunt and OIF vet, nuff said. Lol.

FL is ****ing awesome. If you're a beach guy, you will love it. The weather is good.....until hurricane season. Housing is cheap. Actually everything is cheap. I have a house in Clearwater (other side). I love TN too, but I think FL is a better place to be. I love the water and beach. I love the warm weather. Again a major selling point is the cost of living.
